    Good thread. :good

There seems to be a large focus on body punching in eastern Europe lately.

Ruslan Provodnikov (Russia), Denis Lebedev (Russia), Ivan Redkach (Ukraine), Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (Poland), Kubrat Pulev (Bulgaria), Lukas Konecny (Czech), Lucian Bute (Romania), Adrian Diaconu (Romania) etc. - many of the more successful fighters from that part of the world hang their hat on body shots.

Nedal Hussein always looked his best when he went to the body. Tommy Hearns had some killer rips to the body & Mike McCallum was all about breaking down the body in all of his fights. JC Chavez was great to watch working the body. Good thread.

Following on from IB's comments, I think the art of the body punch is really starting to return.

From a viewing perspective, it's the money punch as the poor bugger on the receiving end shows pain, real pain.

We all love a big KO, but sometimes they can be a fluke. A beautifully executed body punch however, especially one to the liver is the real deal and no fluke.

The fighter giving it, works for it and when delievered right - good night Irene!

I'm glad your enjoying the thread - fighters reading this take note, attack the body!!!

Hussy vs. Arce I - all heart by Hussy. :good

I agree Rock, both brothers would have held any version of a Regular, Interim, IBO, WBU, IBA, WBF, Silver and all the other shitty versions of titles these days, thing was, they never went for anything but the top titles, and with that, top tier opponents.

They fought everywhere too. UK, Asia (Manny in his own backyard!), USA. Didn't duck, and faced the best.

I remember speaking to Billy H. and asked him why the boys didn't chase an IBO shot at home here and you know what his answer was "they wouldn't fight for that, they'd only fight for real titles".

    Enough said.

Big respect for both Nedal and Hussein from me. :good

only if more people had this attitude boxing would be better for it, these two could certainly bang to the body that's for sure

great thread - i train an amateur middleweight kid - just under 6ft but with short reach so i've spent alot of time working on his inside game. he's just started to "get" the left rip - his sparing partners got a taste before xmas and i feel sorry for them when we're back in the gym next week as he's locked it in over the break. i wear one of those thin body shields and now have to add further padding to the liver area until i can get one of those massive one you'd see billy graham wearing with hatton - and i make him wear 14s. anyway we've got a southpaw lined up for 13th feb - the only good thing about fighting a lefty is that their liver is right in front of you!

my favourite body - like others here i bet - is Micky Ward. the value of the left rip is never more evident than in Ward, a mediocre talent who became a world class fighter with nothing more than that killer body hook (a chin and a huge heart)

the other body puncher to impress me of late is bute. he throws that looping left to the body really well.

Good luck for your amateur guy Raxman and great to hear he's taking to the body work! Maybe show him the tape of Hussy Hussein. Completely different to Skinny who went for the loping, wide rips, whereas Hussy would be right inside and double-bang, goodnight!

Care to let us in on who your guy is so we can look out for the results and take an interest?

Micky Ward, tap to the head, bang to the body - signature stuff! :good

    his name is Michael Humphrys
he's fighting sunday 13th feb in melbourne at the calabria club - the youth state title for middleweight was set in november but postponed 3 times - the third date conflicted with a holiday the kid had booked and paid for - it was disappointing to say the least but we blewed and were able to get it held over til the start of the year - only about 5 week before nationals unfortunately or fortunately depending on how it goes - it is special treatment i know, but his opponent shouldnt get a walkover state title because the promoter wanted to play around with his cards - and whats more they probably would give the title and then vic wouldnt have a youth 75kg at nationals

it will 12mths since mike has fought - he had a hip operation in march last year - the difference in his foot speed since the op is a secret weapon as he'd always been troubled by this hip and outside of our gym no one has seen the difference

i don't mean to get to wound up on him or overly spruik him but when he i put 14oz gloves on him to do pad work and he buckles me with a liver shot through the body shield i can only guess what will happen with 12oz on flesh come 13/2

Good luck Raxman, just be wary of any big time managers circling around having a sniff.
