I always try to do this, Rigondeaux style Very difficult to do Either I can't connect with any power because I'm too far out of range, and/or I'm leaving my face and jaw exposed to a straight down the middle Jab, Cross, shuffle left hook to body or jab step to right, right body (for an orthodox fighter) seem to be the most obvious way to do this for me but I never realy opull it off
The straight right down below can also be landed from the outside. Just make sure he doesn't expect it
The medium range uppercuts shown by Bute last weekend were great. It's important to change levels and bend at the knees to avoid being countered though.
I use a couple of things. First two have to coupled with a more feint heavy rhythmic/erratic style: -- Fake a lead straight and use the raising of the gloves and shoulder twist to mask the lead left uppercut/shovel hook to the body. I try to end up a little behind the guy muffling his left to avoid counters. He can shoot the right over the top, but expect it, duck, and roll out. -- Dip low, make him protect the body, and throw a rear overhand. If you can land them, begin to alternate high, low, and double up. Best to do in closer quarters and end up close to his lead shoulder to avoid being caught by the right counter. -- If he is a southpaw the tried and true keep moving left, go right/change levels, and straight right to the gut. BANG! Devastating if you land it. You know it is coming back at you!
Marquez does this very, very well too. Personally when I'm sparring a southpaw I love to throw a lead right to the body and then come up with a hook. It's really open especially if they try to catch me coming in with the jab. You just gotta get outside their front foot.
A jab upstairs, followed by a cross to the solarplex is all I commit to doing. Anything else is just too risky, especially with most of my sparring partners being southpaw counterpunchers.
Thats probably one of my favourite punch, the right hand to the solar plexes, except usually I'll just tap upstairs with a real light jab. Problem is Ive used it so much most of my sparring partners know its coming now Another outside bodypunch I sometimes use is like a long right hook to the body, but admittidly because its from so far out its more like a hard slap, this one doesnt even require a jab upstairs but its pretty tricky to pull off, the other guy isnt usually expecting it though, works well against slow guys that come straight at you. I havent tried it against anyone fast or a mover yet though, I dont dare haha
I like to do that also. I do a jab or feint or half jab looking thing depending on the situation and right cross to the plexus and sometimes I follow up with a liver shot
I'm southpaw, so a straight left to the body usually works great..Especially with an uppercut to the head added on
A weak, range-finding type of jab compliments this punch so well since a normal, stiff jab would push someone back and away from the punch. A bad habit of mine is overreaching with the cross.
