I'm glad I am not the only one who philosophically disagrees with the idea of body sparring, much less the actual practice of it.

Positives: - Learning what it feels like to be hit in the body; in different area's of the body.

    - Practicing the angle in which you must use to make a certain body punch land flush. On someone standing not squared up.. this can be a little for new people

Negatives - Crafting muscle memory to keep your hands lower.. already an issue with most new comers.

    - No use of setting up shots to the body, but jabbing or feinting to the head.

    - Fighters neglect all slipping and waist/upper-body movement because they know they won't get hit in the head. Thus building poor muscle memory

the negative list can really go on for a while.. but I think I made my point

yep. agree with all this. i dont seem to be great at body sparring yet am the best bodypuncher i know in proper sparring at my sort of level.

think it encourages far too many bad habits.

also hit peoples elbows all the time and injured thumbs before.

worst aspect is people just have their guard so low it is completely unrealistic. always tempted to crack a left hook in ther face to show them the error of their ways!

At boxing I used to soley throw to the body at times, I used to get clocked alot in return though.

True what Norfolkinchance said about thumb injuries. I hurt mine the first time i sparred and its only just healed. I reckon cus i've never boxed before my trainer is bedding me on before full contact. Wanna get on with it really but need to make sure i'm ready i guess.
