Has anyone got any advice on how to land bodyshots, I sparred today for the first time alhtough it was only to the body.

My opponent was leaning forward and only blocking to his body most of the time obviously because it was only bodyshots, I tried to tell him to keep his gurad and stance like he would in a real fight but he kept not listening.

This made it very difficult to land clean shots. Could anyone help here, How am I meant to open someone up for bodyshots?

jab to the head jab to the head feint drop down and go to the body. If your only allowed body its pretty hard because you know its coming. But in a real fight most people are worried bout covering the face

Thats what I thought but is there anyway to get open a guy up for a bodyshot even if he is blocking the body? or is their just no point?

Well its impossible to cover up you whole body. I assume by bodyshot you mean the rib area? If so try throwing to the chest and stomach. Except for that though body only sparrng is pretty useless cuz you know where to defend -_- .

Yeah I wish he would let us do full spparing instead, I don't get it because the younger ones are allowed. Maybe because they don't hit as hard.

Wait all your sparring is like that? What happens when that guy has a bout and get hit in the jaw with a left hook or straight right? Honestly no offence but is your trainer senile by any chance?

No, My trainer is a good trainer we have a lot of good fighters. One of them won silver at the commonwealths in Delhi.

I mean that he hasn't let me spar properly yet.

Great to hear well then just keep at it. The only idea idea i can give you is get in close and move off him to your left after DELIBRATLY hitting his elbows and then after a few times move half way and plant your feet and hit hm straight in the body (you should be at an angle where you have all that tender belly to aim at). Watch ricky hatton body shots and stuff online

Make openings by hitting one spot repeatedly and then switching it up; feint to the head at random times with different punches, he should probably squirm a bit anyway even though he knows consciously that it's not going to fire.

Maybe there is a method to his madness. He's getting you use to going to the body. Far too many amateurs and plenty pros don't utilize good body shots like they should. The more you throw the punches, hopefully, the better you get at throwing them and finding the openings.

Kinda like Daniel San doing the wax on, wax off thing in Karate Kid.

But to answer the OP, try using combinations and an opening should come.

When you limit the shot options to that? No, there isn't much point unless you are going up against a severely over matched opponent. Respect for your head shots opens up the body, but if you can't throw upstairs it basically allows the opponent to cover the body.

The coach may just be working on boosting confidence and working on your willingness to get in close for body work so landing isn't really the point of the drill. Just getting used to the pressure, blocking, and throwing back.

As a recommendation I learned from a great guy who visited my gym, you can throw MEAN jabs and lead left hooks to the other guys lead shoulder/arm. You can also shot a lead right hook slightly behind your opponents guard (only because no head shots) step square, and follow up with a mean left uppercut to the body. Remember though, it only works when a guy is not throwing head shots (drills) or is REALLY scared of your body attack (you are dominating).
