Even granite chinned fighters get hurt when hit flush. They just are able to hold it better and fool their adversary. The announcers noticed Mc Callum's legs buckling 3 times under Toney's assault in that last rd.
Toney won the last round and should have gotten the decision. He landed a great left hook midway through the 12th round. He followed up with some good shots and McCallum was on the ropes for a few seconds. But, McCallum never staggered and then pressed ahead as Toney started gassing and potshotting. The announcer, Joe Goosen or Len Berman did say that McCallum was "badly hurt." If he was, it was for a brief few seconds. It didn't look like he was badly hurt, to me. It did look like Toney easily took the round and should have gotten the decision. McCallum had a great chin and was never to me, visably staggered.
Ive seen it. Many times. He buzzed him with one left hook. One. He then missed every follow up and within seconds the fight was back to the same pattern it had been with very even two way action. Trying to build up a 5 second tempest in a teacup as McCallum being badly hurt or some fight altering event is giving Toney far too much credit. The fight was close, so close it could have gone either way. A draw hurts noone. Im fine with it.
It was an outstanding fight and both fighters were superb. The skills on display in that one were something to behold. McCallum kept up the pace and was more consistent, Toney landed the bigger shots and had the biggest round of the fight in the 12th. I didn't think it was hugely controversial. I thought it was pretty even going into the final round. A decent argument can be made that Toney pulled out the win with that big final flurry but I've seen less even fights called draws so I don't have a problem with the scoring either.
I agree. I watched the you tube video of the 12th round before posting on this topic earlier. I thought Toney should have gotten the nod in a close fight, and definitely won the 12th round, but McCallum wasn't in any danger of going down or being stopped in the 12th round. I think the OP is slightly biased for Toney on this one. He gave McCallum 3 rounds - it was much closer than that.
1.32 flush left hook Mike buzzed 1.40 flush right Mike retreats 1.47 flush left uppercut Mike in full retreat 2.57 flush left-right Mike reeling on the ropes 2.59 flush left hook head sprung back, about to fall down, saved by the bell Announcers suggest a 10-8 rd for Toney and state Mc Callum was saved by the bell. But of course, it doesn't mean Mike was hurt noticeably, lol
They landed the same number of punches, but Mike landed 1.5 times more jabs than Toney; which means Toney landed 1.5 times more power punches. Which is saying something, considering Mike was arm punching most of the time.
Lol. Methinks you might be a bit biased. Instead of only looking at one fighter and looking for reasons to award him points try watching both and scoring in an unbiased manner. It makes the sport more enjoyable.
I've said it, Toney's bombs counted more than Mike's pitty pat scoring punches. The last rds proved my point; any doubters as to who wins after 15 instead of 12, lol?
At the beginning of the 12th round they showed the stats through the 11th round. McCallum had thrown significantly more and landed a few more. Toney obviously landed harder shots. They may have shown the final punch stats but I didn't see those.
