These two are often considered among the most gifted british boxers who never held a world title. Who do you think was the most naturally talented one? Who had the most potential?
Laing was phenmonanly talented but never developed it. Also he was very inconsistant Graham was the better fighter IMO as he developed his potential and was more consistanr and dedicated to his boxing.
Agreed, Graham was more accomplished, I pretty much think he fought to the best of his ability more times than not. Against Jackson, he made an error, but against Kalambay and McCallum he performed pretty well...in the end perhaps he just wasn't as good. Laing may have had the more underlying talent, but a huge waste.
Graham was hugely unlucky never to win a world title. He fully deserved the recognition. Agree with previous posters on Laing, outrageous talent just didnt have the discipline to become a great.
Prime for prime on their best night, who do you think would have won between the two? Graham has a weight advantage of course, but let's say they fought at 154 which was Herols weight the first years of his career. Laing would be around 150 as he was against Duran.
Graham wins in convincing fashion even on Laigns best night he still beats him good. Just develpoed his talent more whereas Laing just got by on it.
well summed up mate the laing that beat duran would have troubled anyone at top level but laings biggest fight was against himself and he lost thus the inconsistantly that touched on . grahams overall career is much better than laing
to be fair i dont think the Duran laing beat was that good i think alot of other fihgers would have beat him then just laing got him. Dont get me wrong Laing was a good fighter but there are fighters alot better
Graham had everything going for him fighting McCallum but still fell slightly short (though his own fault and in part, the brilliance he fought). But Laing lacked the bottle to even have a world title fight.
Well, I didn't compare them in that way. Graham clearly had the better career. I just asked for opinions on who people think had the most natural talent.
IMHO Laings win over Duran (while quite an achievement) gets a little overrated. Duran didn't give a **** about boxing at thast point in his career (he also went 10 rounds against average Brit Jimmy Batten around that time) and only pulled his finger out when Arum gave him a 'last chance' against Cuevas.
Graham. Could have won a world title if he hadn't have been ****ing about between gyms towards that point in his career
