Oscar who dumped Frazier twice on the floor Verses Merciless who gave a near peak Lewis all he could handle ? 12 round s
I would lean towards Mercer but this would be a fun fight either way. I do think it goes to the cards, and I do think it is close and have no problem with either guy getting picked as it is close to a toss up for me. I just think Mercer is narrowly better and stronger. Good match up
Cheer's Phil .I m in the mercer camp myself here. I just see him edging it over Oscar ,being the stronger guy.But Ray cops some solid shot s from him through out. A close decision win for the us Army guy .
Although I think it would be a great fight, I think Bonavena's style would confuse Ray. As tough as Mercer was, he had a pretty low boxing IQ. Lots of fighters out thought him in the ring. Bonavena by UD in a tough brawl.
If it's the Ray who showed up against Lewis, as stipulated in the original post, then Mercer. That performance to me was impressive through the whole fight. Oscar v Joe had the shocking start but Joe was always a slow starter and trouble early on was always on the cards for him. But the Mercer of Ferguson or Holmes is another matter entirely. Oscar probably too busy for him and gets a decision.
Oscar was too smart, awkward and strong for Mercer. Sharpshooters, fast moving, crisp punching fighters were Oscar's wolfbane...his kryptonite. Look no further than Jimmy Ellis. Mercer was not a member of the sharpshooter's fraternity.
Oscar was rugged , strong and hard to avoid his awkward bombs - Mercer was rugged and strong - both had good chins and good power - I think this one goes the distance - tough bout to judge- tough fight to pick I may lean with Oscar
