I'd side with Oscar, more effective agression. Add in Peralta and Firpo? Still fancy Bonavena, a bit underrated now, I think.
I'm going for Godoy. Harder to hit clean and his low awkward crouching could smother the leverage required for greater punching of Oscar.
I think more people should be voting for Godoy here, he was a bit more subtle than first appearences suggest. While both were inconsistent against the better contenders, Goddoy has more good wins for my money.
I think Bonavena has a lot more wins, a lot better wins, and more to the point I dont see any performance on Godoy's resume (including Louis) that Bonavena COULDNT duplicate or do better. There a several performances on Bonavena's resume that Godoy could not outdo.
I think bonavena was easier to hit. If he is easier to hit he is not going to duplicate how well Godoy did against Louis the first time. I'm not saying Bonavena was not strong, awkward and hard hitting but if he's easier to hit than Godoy he's going down hard against Louis every time he fights him unlike Godoy who was harder to work out first time around. There's names on Godoys resume that mean nothing now but I bet they could fight. Roscoe Toles and Al Ettore were tough enough to edge bonnavena. Laughran beat Godoy and I guess he would beat Oscar too, but there's no shame in that there were master boxers around like that then.
Godoy never beat Al Ettore and Ettore lost to every top fighter he faced with the exception of a green Walcott (who wasnt a top fighter at the time) and Lewis which was considered a bad decision. Roscoe Toles was a middling HW and it took Godoy EIGHT tries to beat him. Id pick Bonavena to beat Ali at least once out of 8 tries and Id confidently pick Bonavena to beat Godoy and Ettore. I think his style would be poison to Loughran, especially the faded version of Loughran that it took Godoy three tries to finally beat. That being said you may be right about Bonavena being hittable against Louis. But then again Bonavena was uber tough in his prime so Im not certain that alone would be the deciding factor in his performance. I could certainly see him giving Louis some scary moments if guys like Buddy Baer, Tony Galento, and Jim Braddock could.
Bonavena was hard to stop but not hard to drop.Folley and Ellis had him down.Louis would keep him there. I dont see him giving Louis anymore trouble than Simon did. Godoy has 2 wins over a then top ten rated Galento. In 124 fights he was only stopped twice ,once by Louis and once at the tail -end of his career when the ref slung him out for stalling. He is in with a good chance here imo.
I'm not sure that just because someone A, hits harder that somebody B, that floored a fighter C, that it follows that A will KO C, if you can follow that convoluted post. Ali, Louis himself even Patterson were difficult to KO but could be dropped by fighters who were fairly average punchers. Having said that I think Joe would KO Ringo! I feel Bonavena bulls Godoy onto the back foot and grinds him down. Only good fighters beat him, not so with Godoy. I do think however if Peralta could trouble Bonavena then so too could Loughran, at least a peak Loughran.
I 'm like you,I dont suscribe to A beat B who beat C so A must beat C. I wouldn't call Cooper, Banks ,or Frazier average punchers. I also don't think Louis was dropped by an average puncher,I would call all of them good punchers.
