I remember Tyson being off balance and falling backwards, Smith looked more shocked than anything but it wasn't a Kd. The ref saw it for what it was, I seem to remember and called it for what was. I'm just surprised there weren't more shove down s, off balance falls in this match up, especially when Smith was constantly grabbing and dancing with Tyson!
i love these "atg heavyweight champ but hes from the past so its enough of a handicap vs contender" threads Marciano late stoppage
This content is protected I didn't catch it the first time I watched it, but go to 1:45 and slow down the video to 0.5 speed. Smith DOES connect with a weird awkward right hand that moves Tyson's jaw before be goes down. He wasn't hurt and it did have to do with Tyson being off balance, but it was a knock down since Smith landed a punch and Tyson hit the canvas in a split second.
Interesting. I think if fought over 12 rounds yes, I believe he has a good chance of going the distance but over 15 Rocky would have a good chance at stopping him.
So Smith goes the distance with Tyson, but he can't go more than 5 rounds with Marciano? This sort of infantile nonsense is what posters are referring to when they talk about "cults",though perhaps I would suggest an alternative spelling!
So again we see the superiority of amazing Bonecrusher Smith over Carnera, Buddy Baer and Jess Willard - all of whom were more accomplished and better fighters.
Agreed. Smith went the distance with Tyson. How could he even dream to last anywhere near as long as Don Cockell?
One thing people aren't mentioning here is that Marciano was a much better inside fighter than Tyson. He wouldn't be content with being tied up all night as Tyson was. Unlike Mike, Marciano would force Smith to fight his fight, at a pace he'd never seen before. Marciano wears him down for a late KO.
The question posed by the OP .[me] is whether Smith would go the distance, I never mentioned or implied he would win.Given that Tyson was 219lbs for this fight and could not floor, ko, or even get Smith in any real trouble due to Smith's holding tactics, and that Rocky was typically 185lbs. I think its a valid question.
You could go either way on that.. I would say no not a knockdown because it was Mike off balance, but had they called it one no one could argue really since the punch pushed him down. But in reality it was not from a landing punch rocking him and putting him down. Sort of like Hearns vs. Benitez in 1982 when Tommy sort of tilted to the ground with a left hook from Wilfred.
Maybe the 34lbs difference in weight between Tyson and Marciano should be mentioned too? I don't think Marciano's pace was equal to Tyson's ,but Smith managed to shut him down.In which fight can we see a 6feet 4in, 233lbs ranked heavyweight being forced to fight Marciano's fight?
Carnera gave everyone decent fight. I know that you dislike Carnera, but he's decent fighter and better boxer than Smith. Maybe Smith could stop him because he's powerful, but he's also slower and smaller than Carnera.
