I think you need to do a little more research there bro.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner

Let me break it down a bit for you.

FIRST, it was set to the melody of an old British drinking song (tho not originally...but I will get to that later)...not BASED on an old British drinking song.

SECOND, it was written by Francis Scott Key, an American poet born in Maryland. (Not an English poet, from England...again, do some research)

THIRD, it was originally a poem, written after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1812...in which it was the primary fort used in defense of the Baltimore Harbor during that bombardment. It was later put to music.

FOURTH, the words were written as a testament to the brave soldiers who fought off the advancement (some who lived, some who died) during this...and as a testament to "OUR FLAG" still being there at the end (hense the words of the song).

FIFTH, again I say, there are symbols in this world that mean LIFE or DEATH to some people...some of which I do not have that same connection to. Yet just because I dont understand what they mean or why they mean what they do (I will throw you in this category)...does not mean I dismiss them and dont understand or respect that they hold some type of sentament or value to another.

SIXTH, again, you should really do research on things you dont understand before casting judgement upon them.

I come from a family who many of the members of HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES (again, this song is more than just a song to people like me) for this country and what that song symbolizes. And yes, freedom does mean you are free to do as you choose...but freedom does not automatically disregard respecting others or having self respect yourself.

As I said, the booing of an anthem...ANY anthem is dispicable. It not only disrespect those who cherish what those words symbolize...but it disrespects the people who died for those very words...those very beliefs...those very freedoms. Just because you yourself dont hold those ideals or those feelings close to your heart, doesnt mean millions of others feel the same as you.

    Moved to the Lounge.

Seriously, this is priority number last as far as concerns in the pro boxing universe are concerned. Talk of ejecting fans for booing anthems is way out of line. Sure, it's usually drunken obnoxious behavior but unless you're going to start ejecting guys like the "IKE IKE IKE" douchebag in the Quartey-Wright fight, you can't treat this any different just because people's nationalistic sensitivities are involved.

the threadstarter if you would check most or prthaps all of his post suggest clear hate and anti-american.

Booing of anthems is wrong wherever you're coming from. Anthems deserve obation and respect whether its your anthem or from some other country.

Phooey. I guess it's just a personal thing, I don't hold any of that type of pomp-and-circumstance stuff sacred. Some folks do, and that's all well and fine as a personal choice, but don't be shocked and offended if a bunch of drunk people geared up to watch a sporting event get bored and rowdy during the masturbatory pageantry that leads up to it. It's to be expected, and ultimately there's nothing truly wrong about it outside of some glancing blows to people's pride (and not even personal pride, but national pride which I take even less seriously); pride being something which mature adults should be able to turn the other cheek on.

I think its disgraceful. That its especially boorish when its done in someones own Country, by individuals visiting thats not how a guest behaves. I guess since Im Ex-Military, Nation and Pride are to be repected and I have served My Country and risked my life for it, I dont appreciate some drunk idiot who has never sacraficed a damn disgracing it or belitteling it. Classles pieces of ****.

When the US Anthem was booed, they were not booing America, they were booing Bush. Same when Bush was mooned in Germany. Same when Bush was booed at the baseball games.

How about YOU do your research and show me where I used the term "BASED on an old British drinking song".

The tune is directly taken from "To Anachreon in Heaven". Not "based on" - it's and exact copy.

The LYRICS were written by Key around 1812. SHOW ME where I said they weren't. Why do you think I specifically said "the tune" was from an English song?

The song "To Anachreon in Heaven" originated 50-100 years BEFORE the poem was written. The poem wasn't the national anthem first, then later given a melody. The whole thing was only made the anthem about 80 years ago.

The flag referred to as "OUR FLAG" was not even the same flag that you worship now! It had 15 stars and 15 stripes at the time.

And being such a history expert, I'm sure you know all about the War of 1812. And because you know all about it, I'm sure you were out protesting in DEFENCE of France when it was public Enemy #1 a few years ago in the States. Right?

Because, after all, being such a history expert, you would know that if it wasn't for French intervention, The US would have lost that war and you would still be a British colony.

    Right? :yep

I understand fully. I simply believe that most intelligent people can see beyond symbols and trinkets and understand the real issues. I have no time for patriotism, or allegiances to imaginary, changeable borders.

    Right back at 'ya. :good

And maybe look beyond Wikipedia next time. :yep

Many of my family have given their lives for my country as well. And some to help YOUR country.

NONE of them did it for a song or a piece of coloured fabric.

As I said, the booing of an anthem...ANY anthem is meaningless.

Just because you yourself hold feelings for a bunch of words and notes NOT WRITTEN BY YOU OR ANYONE RELATED TO YOU close to your heart, doesnt mean millions of others feel the same as you.

    :****:patriot

By the way, if the song is so sacred to you, why aren't you out protesting it's use at something as trivial as a sporting event in the first place? Surely that's inappropriate?

I dont know about which particular time you refer to, but when it was booed during the PBF v Hatton it was booed because the anthem was a symbol of Floyd ie the enemy. Nothing political in it.

I hate to do this Drex but you are confusing the war of 1812 with the war of independence, almost 50 years before the war of 1812.

Anyway, I think you are being argumentitive, it is of course the words that are most sacred to the Americans, which, as has been said, was written by an American about an important part of American history. It makes little difference where the melody comes from.

I'm not keen on booing nations anthems but, as far as I'm concerned, the Yanks should expect it.

    ;)Sorry AMerica, only messing.

EDIT: Not only are the colonary Brits not the ones who beat us in the War of Independence, not only did we have to fight the full force of France but we also had to fight Spain and the Netherlands too. America held little importance to George III and Parliament then, only 100,000 troops were stationed there. We had much more important wars going on, so losing America wasn't a big deal at all at the time, if it was, we would have fought a proper war over it.

I don't think it was political at all, Mayweather was the enemy, as the previous poster has said.

Many people dislike Americans because they are stereo typed as a rather insular nation, and with a crackpot President who wants to rule the world.

One statement is a fact (Bush), the other is opinion. I know about five or six Americans, and only one is insular - but when I say, why not go back if it's so amazing, the conversation decends into silence!

If you trawl mainland Europe though, most people hate the Brits, but the Brits hate most of Europe, because we pay a shitload of taxpayers money into the EU, and get ****all, other than butchers being told to serve ham in 100 grams, as opposed to a quarter of a lb, the gin slinging dodderers do nothing for us!

    No, I meant 1812.

The French aggression in Europe drew the British forces away.

The last statement "if it wasn't for French intervention, The US would have lost that war and you would still be a British colony" was meant in two parts - French intervention helped the US in the 1812, AND the war of independance.
Direct intervention in the WOI, indirect intervention in 1812.

And you are right - I am just being argumentative. :D It's one of those issues where one side cares passionately and the other can take it or leave it. I'm on the relaxed side - I can take it as far as I want and not really give a ****. :yep

ANOTHER reason why patriotism is bad - it causes unnecessary stress. :yep

would the british people want it if america would become to be part of the british?

because theres a lot of post suggesting that british is the origin of america and that had it not been for the british there would be no america, and that british IS superior to america.

not that i deny any of the claims of the above posters, i couldn't care less because i'm not from america and i'm from some 3rd world country but it is clear as of today most of the 3rd world countries are viewing america as the most superior country as of date.

Past is past just like how everyone else were originated from romans, muslims, jews, to barbarians, and to neanderthals. what would be the topic is today
