The next boxing book I plan to purchase will be on Joe Gans. There appears to be two definitive books on him: (1) "A Biography of the First African American World Boxing Champion," by Colleen Aycock and Mark Scott, and (2) The Longest Fight: in the Ring with Joe Gans, Boxing's First African American Champion" by William Gildea. Both get good reviews from what I can see and might each merit a read. However, is either better suited to be my first book on Gans? Thank you.
I don't actually have them but from what I've seen reviewed Aycock & Scott's book is about his career whereas Gildea's is about the Nelson fight. I have been debating this for a while now but I think the best course would be Aycock & Scott to get an overall picture of his whole career & then Gildea if you want to read all about the Nelson fight. Also if you are not aware try these links (sorry if you already know of them) - http://coxscorner.tripod.com/gans2.html http://coxscorner.tripod.com/ganslinks.html
