Sorry for the delay in replying. Unfortunately think that site will turn out to be of limited/mixed use. It's free to use, free to register and free to borrow books. The books can be borrowed in their entirety. Think some are downloadable too. However, some books are on 14 day loans while others (most it seems) are on one hour loans. The one hour loans are, I think, renewable depending upon availability, which could make reading them tricky or irritating. Just borrowed one now to see. Think all their material used to be longer duration types but turns out they are being sued and have made changes to how they do things. So all the titles on display might not be readable due to time constraints. Apologies for not checking first! Might be useful if they have magazines you are interested in, not sure how many of them there are.

it's still useful, in the sense you can link a book, then search within that book for the boxer you have in mind and it might pull up a few pages you can bite off Excepts from...

That's a good way to look at it! Also I borrowed one of the hour loans and have renewed it a couple of times so far. So it might also be a case of if others want to read it when you do. There's also those books which are collections of journalism, anthologies, pictorial, etc.

No apologies required at all brother.

I’ll register and bite in - looks like a great site. Thanks again.

Part of the fun is searching for what you might be looking for and sometimes finding things equally as interesting that weren’t even on your radar in the first place.

Also just to say I asked about making this a sticky and was told that it would need to be a longer lasting effort before that could be done. Perhaps a what are we reading, recommendations, resources thread. Lets see if how it pans out. Hopefully this can be kept going.

Well, I just borrowed ROAR OF THE CROWD for 1 hour. I haven't read that book in eons. I won't pretend that I sped read it to the finish, but I did knock over quite a few pages and it's too easy to return to for multiple borrows later. There are also great books to be read complete without borrowing. Great stuff. Thanks again.

Good idea. Just me, but I think it’s worthy of being stuck right now.

Sorry, but still can’t say enough about the Internet Archive site you recommended and linked. Easy sign up and then borrow to your heart’s content from a incredibly generous and wide range.

Books such as Peter Heller’s In This Corner and Nick Tosches’ The Devil and Sonny Liston are available to name just two.

There’s also stuff you can read without sign up or borrowing.

To whet peoples appetite - The Ring, July 1968 - examining Liston’s barring and comparing the KOs between Marciano - Walcott II and Ali- Liston II, to name just two features in this particular monthly edition.

Absolute GOLD in my book. Thanks again.

Good to hear it's proving useful. Thanks for The Ring link- will definitely be reading that one. There's some really good stuff on there and so far no problem borrowing it. Read some of Katherine Dunn's One Ring Circus: Dispatches from the World of Boxing on there. A collection of her boxing essays. Not a writer I know much about but well written and interesting pieces.

Sounds interesting - another for me to look up.

I don’t know if it’s the case with Ms Dunn, but it’s refreshing to read writers who aren’t too close to the sport as to become cliched in their expressions and ideas - great to have accomplished writers who are also fans and know enough to write refreshing pieces on boxing - including guys like Mailer and Plimpton.

Quick update on this thread. Read Smokin Joe: The Life of Joe Frazier by Mark Kram Jr, a while ago which was a good look at his life, politics, career, etc and obviously his relationship with Ali. Is balanced and honest I think - does not shy away from his flaws but also does not ignore what he was subjected to. Well written and informative.

Also Damage by Tris Dixon. A devastating read. I don't think any of us can be unaware of the risks to fighters and the harm so many have suffered but this lays all out in terms of the development of the scientific understanding of it historically but also the sheer scale of it. Dixon is a great writer. It's forces the reader to ask some very hard (and necessary) questions of themselves and wider society too. It really is must read if you are interested in the sport.
