Can anyone reccomend me one? I'm not looking for a book about technique, but more of a novel/auto/biography etc.
Three very good reads: 'No Man Stands Alone' by Barney Ross, 'Somebody Up There Likes Me' by Rocky Graziano, and 'Flight of the Hawk' by Aaron Pryor.
Never heard of a boxer writing a novel... A recent good one is Johnny Nelson's autobiography. He either wrote it himself or dictated it.
Cm, does it matter to you if the books you've listed were ghost written? It's not to disparage the fighters, but I think the thread-starter actually wanted to find a book authored by a fighter, not ghosted or "as told to" and edited.
Yes, not mention I believe those books are also no longer in print, which will make them hard to get ahold of.
It wasn't written by a fighter but gun-tottin' trainer Jerry Boyd, under the psudonym FX.Toole, wrote ROPE BURNS, some quality essays adapted into the "Cinderella Man" screenplay. Toole, aside from being a cutman, was a real character/hardcase who trained fighters in a very rough area of downtown LA. He died before "Cinderella Man" was released.
Good stuff. Yes, Norman Mailer went out of his way to stress that it was all Jose's work. Mighty impressive it is too. I particularly like his description bing knockd down: "A million ants enter your body, then just as quickly, get back out again". :good
