Example of "born punchers" George Foreman, David Tua, Jimmy Thunder, Tommy Morrison.

Example of "made punchers" Evander Holyfield, Bobby Czyz.

Notice a born puncher can flatten somebody with a single punch. A made puncher can flatten somebody too but it may take a larger number of punches to do it. They may not have that natural power, however, they do have the leverage and acceleration in their arsenal to win by stoppage.

    Born punchers -
    Marciano
    Shavers
    Foreman
    Nichols

    Made?
Punchers are born punchers I thought, unless putting on loads of muscles like Joshua helps

Hearns was a made puncher. He had little amateur KOs.

True. Greg Page was similar too, not much of a puncher until Janks Morton trained him.

Joe Calzaghe was a "made" puncher. By referees in this case.

    No one mentioning Julian Jackson
Randall Bailey? World class right hand and B class everything else. That right hand gotta be god given
    Tyson? God given?
What about JMM early in his career not much of a puncher later on when he planted his feet he could dig
    David Haye?
Hatton had a couple of one punch KO's but was more a voume puncher

Deontay Wilder. Poor technique, low muscle mass, great snap.

Junior Witter is another good example of a made puncher. Prior to his loss to Judah he had only stopped 4 opponents out of 15 opponents. But after that decision loss he clearly made some changes as he went from feather fisted to stopping his next 15 opponents and even in the 16th fight he faced the iron chinned, never stopped before or since Lovemore Ndou but dropped him twice on the way to a decision. Witter went from a non puncher to one of the most feared punchers in the division.

I thought about Mike Tyson but for me rating his power is confusing. I don't think he hit as hard as his KO percentage suggests but he was an extremely effective puncher. His secret; his speed and the ability to nail an opponent with a punch they never saw coming. Kind of the same way I view Lebedev.

Both those guys are heavy handed. Tyson often knocked guys out with glancing or poorly timed blows. You can't do that unless you have a lot of weight on your shots.

Tyson definitely had natural power. He didn't have that heavy handed clubbing power that guys like Foreman had but what he did have was tremendous ability to create torque through his punching technique and physique. He could hit you with an innocuous shot but was able to generate seemingly effortless power via his speed and technique even if it looked like a nothing shot.

Wlad is another fighter who could do this. His right hand seemingly has very little weight behind it, almost an arm punch but his speed combined with his technique meant he could generate crazy power while guys like Lewis, Wilder, Bowe etc had to load up a whole lot more to generate similar power.

This is a really good discussion. I hope people can add some more knowledge to it.

Or perhaps he was a born puncher with brittle hands. So say old man Eubank anyway.
