I've ocassionally thought about this fight. The Bowe who fought Holyfield in the first fight, against the Douglas who fought Tyson, who wins and why? I'm personally going to go with Douglas, but to me it's a close call.
The question in my mind would be how would Douglas do getting hit more. Tyson didnt land that much in the Douglas fight because he was dying on the outside, and he still managed to drop Douglas. Bowe could equal Douglas in the jab department and he wasnt the greatest at handling a lot of fire. Bowe would probably be too much for Douglas. Buster had good skills, but he was really able to put it together against Tysons stlye, and lack of fire that night, not this all time great monster that only came out one night and then went back into hiding. A big strong tall heavy with a good offense and jab like Bowe, would have most likely made Douglas look like the ordinary Douglas.
That's possible, but I thought Douglas was throwing good jabs and had a lot of power in over hand rights. (if I recall correctly). He really laid a beating on Tyson and that takes some doing.
Your right, but could he keep Bowe on the outside like that? The Bowe that fought Holy in the first fight? Probably not, thats why I say the style matchups are so different between Tyson and Bowe its hard to say Douglas would be able to keep Bowe who was 6'5 on the outside stranded on his jab and right hand.
Well that is the question, and the key to the fight. Can he keep him on the outside, and if not, how much punishment would Bowe have to take to get inside? My thoughts are that he punches considerably harder than Hollyfield, (at least in that fight) so getting inside might not be easy.
Yeah but were comparing the worst Tyson against the best Bowe. Holyfield could punch a lot quicker and accurately as seen in his fight with Douglas, even that was a pretty horrible version of Douglas.
That would have been some fight. Douglas was ultra motivated in the Tyson fight, and refused to lose. Buster hauled himself off the floor after taking that helacious uppercut, shook it off, and regained command in the next round. Unfortunatly , Douglas never showed that kind of resolve before or since, but on that night, he fought like a great fighter. Bowe, for all his other faults, had unlimited balls. Riddicks refusal to quit when Golota was using him as a heavy bag is the main reason Andrew purposely fouled out twice. Golota's head exploded when he hit Bowe with everything and Riddick kept coming back for more. The Bowe of the first Holyfield fight had the sames guts, was fresher and in better condition than the Bowe of the Golata fights. A fight between the 90 Douglas and the 92 Bowe would have been hard fought and closely contested. Both were willing to give and take. Someone , if not both would have left the ring not quite the guy that went in. Since I have to pick, I'll go with Bowe, who may have been a little stronger, and may have been able to neutralize the Douglas jab with his own.
