Look - Golota (and many other big HWs for that matter) would beat Bowe 3 out of 5 times. Bowe can beat small cruiserweights, we know that but he is a fat and lazy slugger that would be easily man-handled against a good real HW. Just look what happened when he met Lewis in the amateurs - he was KTFO. Ali would laugh at him for two rounds and then expedite his ass TFO of there in round three.
Yea, because ****ing Golota rocks! Not many would have beaten Bowe, in my opinion. Maybe Lewis or the Kilts...
Bowe on an on night is a very dangerous man. I'll take the **** and say he has a chance of upsetting Ali.
I consider the first fight against Holyfield as Bowe's best performance. He wasn't obese. The thread said prime-for-prime. If this is pre-war Ali, I'll give him the nod. After that, I give Bowe a higher chance of pulling off the upset.
At what point do people stop reading a thread and then just post? A lot of guys are using terms like "fat" and "obese" to describe Bowe. Of course he was fat and obese, and lazy for that matter. But the ****ING THREAD SAID "PRIME FOR PRIME". Read before typing you ****ing Ali sack swinging idiots. Now that I have that out of the way- In the two fighters PRIMES, Bowe fought between 235-240 lbs and was 6 foot 5 inches tall. Ali in his PRIME fought at 210-215 and was 6 foot 3 inches tall. HUGE SIZE ADVANTAGE to Bowe. A good big man beats a good smaller man 9 out of 10 times. Especially at heavyweight. We saw Ali lose in his prime to Joe Frazier. Riddick Bowe only lost once in his prime and that was to Evander Holyfield, and he was out of shape for that fight and there was the whole fan man debacle to change the complexion of the fight. I do think he obviously lost both Golota fights, but he was past his prime at that point due to the wars with Holyfield and his lack of staying fit. In the end we are talking about two men at their very best, and a good big man will beat a smaller man the majority of the time.
"A good big man beats a good smaller man 9 out of 10 times." yes. But. An average skilled big man does NOT beat a very highly skilled smaller man 9 out of 10 times. Bowe is a mirage more than anything. He was an average champion at best and a guy like Golota (who was ok, but nothing special) was at least as good if not better than Bowe. "Bowe prime".... what an illusive concept. It seems Bowe's prime is like one fight - and that was against a cruiserweight. A mirage is all that Bowe is and he should never ever be compared to any real HW champion.
It's funny how generally speaking most publications and fans have Holyfield in their top 25 all time great HW's, but if you don't want to give a fighter like Bowe any credit you then say that Holyfield was simply a Cruiserweight. Pretty lame arguement. Considering the fact that Holyfield only lost three times in his prime, and TWO of those fights were to Bowe I guess that doesn't mean a whole lot either. Because, you know, Holyfield was only a Cruiserweight. For that matter, Lennox Lewis didn't beat down Holyfield the way that Bowe did. But by your logic Lennox Lewis sucks too. Lewis arguably lost the second Holyfield fight, but suffice it to say that it was damn close, and their first fight was by no means a beat down. Yet Bowe takes Holyfield to the woodshed twice, and loses a VERY close MD that was interupted for twenty minutes due to fan man. Apparently that is not that impressive by your standards.
Bowe was big, and had decent boxing skills when he cared to use them, (good jab, good movement for a big man) but as a technician he was full of holes. The way he just couldn't seem to throwing a solid, sharp straight right hand for example: it always was a looping right or overhand right or right hook. Anyway, Ali dances back and lets Bowe take the lead, something Bowe is fine with doing. Ali soon proves he can punch faster than Bowe, outjab Bowe on the move, and counter Bowe through the various holes in his style. When Bowe starts getting worried he starts trying to brawl, and then the openings come easier for Ali. Bowe has his moments, especially on the inside where Ali might be surprised at first how well Bowe can fight in clsoe for a big man, but that just leads Ali to adapt, and outwrestle and clinch Bowe more when they get in close. Ali wins the decision going away, probably about 9-3 or 8-4 if Bowe has a really good night.
Evander was always at a disadvantage at HW. Only against one fighter was he not - Tyson. Against Tyson Evander had the tools, but other than that he had to be so much better than the bigger opponents to actually win. Evander could go up there and have some fun and do his best. However such a smaller man should not be who you would create a name as a great HW against. He should be someone you meet because he is a great cruiser and wants to play at HW. Just like Haye wants to play at HW now - it is not uncommon, but good HWs don't have one of these cruisers as their only claim to fame. However, from a psycologocal point of view Bowe was in the right spot at the right time. Evander (who had Tyson's number) had beaten Tyson and now suddenly beating Evander was like beating some great invincible HW. Evander was a great cruiser and had Tyson's number and that is all there is to it - he is not THAT good a HW and many big HWs would most likely beat Evander just based on the size diference. However, with the magic of Tyson defeated, Evander became magical and then Bowe beats him so some fans just couldn't really get the bigger picture. Bowe can beat small cruisers, so what? He openly avoided Lewis like the plague just because Lewis was his own size.
Everybody claiming bowe has no shot to even trouble ali must be thinking of the bowe from the golota fights (or maybe the fight vs billy zumbrun). not that bowe was horrible vs golota, but his best was earlier - see the holy trilogy. he was a dangerous h2h heavy vs anybody including ali. 6'5 and atheletic with skill and great infighting. ali's a favorite no doubt with his hand/foot speed, but bowe would at least present problems.
I choose Ali by dec because I dont think he stops prime Bowe, very few if any would stop prime bowe & Riddick aint stopping Ali either but I just cant see bowe, as good as he was at his peak being able to outland Ali for the full 12 rds, yet again its prime Ali`s speed & reflexes that bag this fight 8-4 or 9-3. Even when Bowe did have his moments, Ali`s sharp counters would make Bowe think twice about becoming too reckless. Ali W12 Bowe
