Look at his opposition outside of Holyfield, in an era of lots of very good fighters.

The only other top guy he fought, beat his ass black and blue (Golota).

Its easier to make a list of who he fought than who he missed.

Staying away from fantasy match conjecture here, Bowe's resume is somewhat devoid of highly rated punchers, circa the period he was at the top. I know many will take issue with that, but contrast his championship period with that of Lennox Lewis (as an example) and one faced punchers while the other seemed to manage not to. Oh...and Bowe did dump a belt in a trash can...rather then exact personal and professional revenge on a man who at the time, held a decisive win over him, all the while pretending to be the heavyweight champion (Lewis). Suss it out. Bowe had the opportunity to end all doubt, make a big buck and exact sweet revenge...but he chose not to. Somewhere out there, as Bowe dropped a belt in the trash for all the world to see, Joe Louis was spinning in his grave.

Tyson won the World heavyweight championship after unifying the confusing plastic or defending against top-rated and/or undefeated talent. Riddick Bowe cannot claim this. Neither can Chris Byrd...though I'd bet the farm Byrd would have done his best to try if he had been given those opportunities.

Bowe softened Holyfield up for Mikey.
There's no way Mikey would have done so well against Holyfield without Holyfield being put through that Bowe trilogy ordeal beforehand.
The only reason Mikey looked so good against Holyfield was because of all those punches Bowe had landed on Holyfield.
Likewise, you could say Bowe was softened up by Holyfield for Golota.
