Bowe and Lewis going at it. Man I wish this fight would have happened!!!

Lewis gets Bowe out of there in Round 7 after he feels out Bowe for the first couple of rounds before taking that boy down town

When did you start watching boxing? Last winter?

 

Bowe was shot when he met Golota. IMO he was deteriorating already after the 1st Holyfield fight - he lost the rematch (look how his body changed), and was lucky to have hepatisis on his side in the rubbermatch.

I would favour Wlad and (prime) Vitali over him, but that is about all. Maybe Haye and Chagaev decision him as well, although Haye with his chin and Bowe's power would have to be more than careful.

I doubt Nico or Povetkin have enough balls to face prime Bowe. Even so, Povetkin is small and has mediocre defence, which would be a disaster. And there was a reason Valuev was never matched against a puncher remotely close to Bowe.


The rest of the list is a joke. Sosnowski and Pianeta? What did they do to make you think they could just survive a distance against Bowe?

I wonder what that was about as well. Seems Bowe was dissapointed in Lewis for turning on him or something. :huh

 

lewis would of busted that ass and bowe knew it, which is why the fight didn't happen. lennox saying i'm going to knock you out and bowe is like a little kid that can't fight back " knock me out then". bowe is like one of them little kids who says " knock me out then if it makes you feel big". total mismatch this would of been.

 

bowe was disapointed that lennox wanted his titles, and felt it was unfair knowing lennox was the superior boxer.

 

As much as I like Haye I have to admit that Bowe was at least honest so I wouldn't exactly call him pathetic. Haye was insulting and calling out the Klitschkos even before making his final move up and now it looks like he doesn't care to mention them.

Meaning what? If you wish to debate something written, explain yourself, in what exactly you wish to say

 

That's what I meant by "honest", his actions were too obvious that he didn't really need to say it for anyone to know this.

 

lennox has really grown on me over the years i think he would have beat bowe for sure.

 

I love how people read minds, or just buy into what the Lewis camp said about Bowe. The reality is more complex than this simplistic - and very self-serving to Lewis - scenario would suggest.

Riddick Bowe had just won the title and he and his manager wanted to make some money. The plan was to take an easy voluntary defense against a beatable oponent (turned out to be Michael Dokes) as a "homecoming" fight to his local fans, and then take on then top contender Ray Mercer, who was perceived as a serious threat off his destruction of Tommy Morrison. Unfortunately, Mercer lost to Jesse Fergusson, so that's who Bowe fought. Then they were going to rematch Holyfield, which was the biggest money fight out there in the U.S. at the time!

People don't seem to remember, but Lewis was neither particularly highly regarded in the U.S. nor was he much of an attraction. Sure there were diehard boxing fans like myself who thought of him as the most desirable challenger at the time, but the general public would have gone "ho-hum" and the buys would not have been great - or at least as not as great as they COULD have been if the match were a title unification match that happened AFTER Lewis had a belt and had accumulated a few more wins.

Thus, a Bowe-Lewis unification match could happen AFTER Bowe beat Holyfield for the second time, and generated much more money than it could in early 93. Not only that, but Bowe would get all the money from facing Mercer and then Holyfield in the rematch. Of course, Holyfield upset that applecart, as often happens in boxing. But this is undoubtedly the sort of thinking that underlie Newman and Bowe's dumping of the belt in the trash can.

Boxers do this sort of **** all the time. What hurts Bowe and Newman is that their plans did not work out, and a Lewis fight never happened. But I guarantee you that was not the intention and "fear" had nothing to do with it. Making the most possible money did!

 

Lewis also went on to lose to McCall and went about rebuilding his career but yeah, it's not just a simple Bowe was afraid of Lewis. There may have been an element of this but overall timing had the best laid plans that went to waste were also to blame.
