This content is protected Bowe says he thinks Walcott would be ahead on the cards until he comes back and stops Walcott late. I think that's a pretty honest assessment.
A likely outcome. Bowe had fast hands but slow feet and was a big hefty guy. He didn't move his head enough and had leaky defense. No way he could just bomb out a cagey guy like Walcott who had shifty footwork and awkward counters. I mean even the C level Tyrell Biggs and Hide managed to avoid Bowe for several rounds and they didn't have 50% of Walcott's ring IQ. Bowe's durability, heavy hands, and combination punching eventually breaks Walcott down in a nail biter. Probably within 9 or 10 rounds while behind on the cards. Bowe wasn't just some big dumb slugger, he had great fundamentals, an extensive amateur background, and one of the best trainers of all time. He would make up for his lack of defense and speed with amazing offensive.
Depends what kind of shape Bowe comes in. He’d have to come in lean and mean (around 225 lbs to 230 lbs) for me to see Bowe having a chance at knocking out Walcott. Bowe showing up overweight like he had a bad habit of doing would result in Walcott giving him a boxing lesson.
I think Bowe was just being respectful. Given where he grew up, it's likely that he's being a little too gracious to a guy he otherwise wouldn't have been. Unless that respect carries on over into the ring, I can't see that scenario happening. He could walk through Holyfield's power for the most part, and Walcott can't avoid him forever. There's a massive five inch height advantage for Bowe, coupled with a seven inch reach advantage. Keep in mind that's before the 40lbs Walcott would be giving away. He also wouldn't be able to clinch for safety, due to the size and Walcott seemed to struggle when guys pressured him. Plus, when it comes to speed, fundamentals and pressure, Bowe was much better than Marciano. He also had an extremely heavy jab which he burrowed in with. I think it's likely Bowe is worse for Walcott than vice versa. Although I can sure buy that Walcott was a bad style for Bowe. After all, lesser, but somewhat similar guys caused Bowe issues. But I can't buy that it would translate into Walcott overcoming the insurmountable physical advantages Bowe has over him. Does anyone think Bowe from the first Holyfield fight would struggle so much with Herbie Hide?
Well he didn't say he thinks Walcott would beat him, just befuddle him for a while before he stops Walcott.
