Bowe never fought a puncher ?? Maybe true, what 'Puncher' did Tyson face ?? You can dissect any fighter like this .... And please dont say Tyson faced Ruddock, Razor's career record can be totally shot down for what it was ....

Bowe was a brilliant fluid heavyweight boxer who had all the shots, but the problem was he had to out-grit Holyfield, and this shouldnt be under-estimated .. Bowe had to go in against a prime Holyfield 3 times, he had to take on a guy that always prepared for a war, he had to take on a guy that was going in the ring to give everything .... Vitali, Lewis, Tyson never had to deal with a man like a prime Holyfield .. Couple that with the fact that Bowe had personal problems, he had ill discipline with eating and he had a moron as a manager Rock Newman .... Riddick Bowe was a talented heavyweight whose flame burned for a short time but then burned out ....

But Bowe's performance against Holyfield in that first fight will go down in history as a great 'attacking' performance, i cant think of any Lennox Lewis wins that will go down in similar fashion .... Bowe was not knocked out by McCall and Rahman .. Bowe was totally gone in his fights with Golota, but still he had the heart of a champion to take all those head shots .... Lennox Lewis couldnt have taken those head shots .... Give Bowe credit, I'm a British fight fan but im experienced enough to know that there are far more questions on Lewis than Bowe .. Bowe was judgable in a real fight, Lewis was never comfortable taking a shot, the Briggs fight proved this, he had to use his size advantage, take centre ring and jab (which he always did skillfully) .. Lewis couldnt go into wars like Bowe had too ..

 

**** Bowe i only personally rank him because he won the holyfield trilogy.

Bowe is the biggest waste of talent at HW in the last 30 years

 

Bowe did say he was out on his feet aganst Herbie Hide....maybe his chin was more shakey then we thought.

I don't understand your train of thought on this at all. VK vs Lewis, Mercer vs Lewis, Mavrovic vs Lewis...Lewis took huge shots to the head and was in a war through these. That he couldn't take the shots Bowe took from Golota is certainly not definite in any way and he did go into wars. Famously, in fact. And the shots he took from Frank Bruno probably did more than tickle.

It's just another boxing myth in which Lewis could never afford to stand his ground & trade.

Yep, and i think this is the most vital difference between Wlad and Lewis: Lewis could really FIGHT when he had to, and fought wars with the likes of Mason, Mercer, Briggs and V. Klitschko.

Whether it was in his best interest is an other, though i don't think he could've out-boxed Vitali at that point of his career.

Bowe in this sense is the opposite of Wlad: he holds size advantages over most opponents, but rarely stayed on the outside or played it safe. Also because his fighting-tall tools (jab, straight right) were pretty mediocre compared to his infighting skills. Bowe almost has to fight on the inside.

Lewis is very much a complete boxer, because he can do what both Wlad and Bowe do best. That is not to say whatever they do, he can do better, of course.



As for the topic at hand, Bowe didn't face a huge hitter, but not that many have. It is remarkable, however, considering how puncher-loaded the 90's were. I'm not sure how he'd react to some of the best shots that Lewis, Tyson, Ruddock or Morrison could dish out. Holyfield and Golota are good hitters but not dynamite punchers.. yet they had him down.

Still, Bowe's defence was pretty bad and he shipped a lot of shots, even against lower calibre opponents. So, i think his chin is very good.

 

I dont think Lewis had a horrible chin, but he was knocked out by single punches, but both by decent punchers. Lewis dominated a division of big punchers, but their big punch was often times overshadowed by their horrible technical skills and Lewis's good ones, which kept Lewis out of harms way most of the time.

 

WHat do you expect, the ref jumped in immediately for the first standing eight count and then for the stopage. Lewis was teeing off on him..

Look facts are facts. Bowe had huge question marks about his chin in the amateurs where he was knocked out cold several times. I actually he developed into a hell of a pro at his short best. I think only a huge puncher with other skills like a Lewis might have exposed him.

 

I agree, Bowe got hit a lot.Golota and Holyfield had power but were not elite one punch KO guys I think Bowes people avoided Lewis for a reason.

 

Rock Newman sure had a big mouth when it came to asking him if he felt his man was better than Lennox.. of course, a lot of that went away almost immediately when Lewis sparked Ruddock in two. I wonder what their decision would have been had Lewis struggled life and death with Razor over 12 rounds to barely take a decision. Perhaps Bowe vs Lewis may have come off.

 

The doubt kind of cuts both ways.

You might put Bowe in with a puncher for the first time and find that he just took it.

Herbie Hide is the kind of puncher who might have put anybody on ***** street.

 

Fighter's careers are easy to dissect. As far as Bowe vs Lewis. I think it is up to whether or not Bowe gets inside the jab of Lewis a few times. Lewis was great on the inside for his size, but I think Bowe wins the battle of the inside. Impossible to call for me and since it didn't happen, we will never know.
