Heres a young Bowe some 8 fights before fighting Evander Holyfield going his first 10 rounds with former champion Tony Tubbs. I dont know how anyone could score it even close to how the judges had it but see for yourself. Bowe won easily 7-3 is being generous for Tubbs. I don't know my card but I know I scored it 95-95 when I saw it last a few years back. I will make a point of re-watching this and seeing what I think. I remember it being a pretty good fight, for the mix of styles.
No it was boring and one sided Tubbs didnt do ****. Bowe was not hit a lot and paced himself a lot slower than we would see in future fights.
It was a very close fight. KO mag. at the time thought Tubbs won. Dan Dierdorf, the announcer, thought Bowe clearly won. Of course, Dan Dierdorff didn't know boxing, as was usually obvious during his telecasts. Tubbs was, as usual, boring, but effective. He moved enough to confuse Bowe. Bowe couldn't land anything significant on the wily Tubbs. That's what Tubbs did at his best. He shut down your offense, then countered with quick, but soft punches. He was a Jimmy Young type of fighter. The judges rarely appreciate their subleties.
:blood Did you just watch the fight and think it was close or are you going by what you remember from KO mag? Tubbs really didnt do anything other than back pedal, flick the occassional jab and counter lefthook but hardly anything to call it a a close fight.
I watched it a bit more than a year ago. Don't have my scorecard anymore, but I remember considering a draw a fair verdict.
I scored it a draw another time this thread came up, really prefered Tubbs movement, defense, jab and coutner punching.
I remember barely giving the fight to Bowe, both times I watched it.. Once many years ago, and once perhaps two years ago.. I think 6 rounds to 4 was fair, but neither man can claim to decisively beating the other..
I watched the fight again today. Tubbs really threw next to nothing and Bowe was the aggressor the entire fight. I really couldnt give Tubbs more than three rounds tops and that was being generous.
