There is very little between douglas and bowe.

douglas beat some good fighters. Tyson, mccall, berbick, page without the fan fare of being an ex olympian. buster took fights as the opponent and won.

Had Douglas went down the tomato can route that bowe did he would have had the same career as bowe. No better, just the same. He still would have become disillusioned and unmotivated but it would have happened at the time it did with bowe. there is an upside to a career and a downside. there is a right time to fight somebody. there is a wrong time to fight somebody. it takes a very short examination of the two careers to work out bowe got all his guys at the right time and douglas fought most guys at the wrong time.

Bowe did not fight one unbeaten fighter until AFTER he won the title. Douglas fought 2 unbeaten fighters in their home towns within his first 4 fights.

Bowe has some good names on his resume before he won the title but apart from coetzer they were no longer good fighters when riddick fought them.
It was a matchmaking masterclass that douglas did not have as a luxury.

Douglas fought the great Jesse Clark, twice I think, on the way up.
    That takes some balls.
No 'tomato can route' for Douglas.

My bad, Douglas fought Clark THREE times, not twice.

    Quite a perspective.

So do you recognize Douglas as potentially an elite level fighter without the legacy?

I think of Bowe as an elite fighter his legacy puts him away from the top 15 but he is nonetheless a top guy.

bowe is a top guy, but so is Douglas. they achieved the same but by different route.

so that’s 3 easy fights. so what?

what about about when Douglas was thrown in with bey on his debut in his home town? what about when Ferguson was 11-0? its a bit different than when bowe fought Ferguson when he was losing more times than when he was winning.

Stefan tangsted, tex cobb, mike Williams were the "face" on the nights buster fought them.

bowe was the "face" each time he fought until he landed holyfeild. bowe was never cast as the "heel".

Douglas was the heel who won. several times.

Douglas had the same opportunities as Bowe. He boxed his whole life. His father was a fighter. The idea that he was some kind of blue collar fighter is a total joke. If Douglas was so good he wouldn't have lost to guys like Ferguson and White. Defeating a guy like Tubbs in his 20th bout is better than just about everything Douglas did in his career besides the Tyson win.
There really isnt much comparison between the two. Bowe was the superior fighter with a proven track record. Douglas was an inconsistent under achiever.

and yet tubbs was further away from being the beltholder he had been when bowe fought him than berbick was when douglas fought him. mccall was beter than tubbs, he was actualy on the way up when douglas fought him. nobody was on the way up when bowe fought them before his title shot aside from coetzer who was not fancied to win.

bowe and douglas were the same guy with different matchmaking.

BOXING ILLUSTRATED scored it 97-93 for Tubbs. "Using his experience in detecting the one-punch assault, Tubbs lured his adversary into the ropes where he quickly became adept at landing counterpunches to the body. Tubbs landed more and cleaner shots while Bowe threw more, but missed more, his right hand never landing flush. The final rounds had Tubbs throwing combinations while Bowe remained bewildered. Tubbs faught a smart but non-spectacular fight and had he been able to punch, he wouldn't have been at the mercy of the judges."

Why even debate with you what a ridiculous post? :-( I guess Douglas had a basketball game the weekend of the olympics?

Truly amazing if this is really what was in the magazine. Tubbs nor his camp even thought he did this well.

Jesse Clark wasn't an "easy fight".
He must've been tough, he earned himself two rematches !

lol! or maybe nobody else would fight douglas?

I know micky duff talked jim jacobs out of matching Tyson with douglas around the time jacobs matched tyson with jesse furguson. micky told jacobs that douglas was all wrong for young Tyson at that point and jacobs took that advice.

Douglas was a member of the "who needs him club". A good fighter with no name.
