Well, Bowe and his manager had a long-running feud with Jose Sulaiman, the WBC, and Don King, who seemed to exercise a lot of control over the WBC ratings, so that played into the whole episode.

Frank Maloney admits that one of the offers made was good, and I think he said Lewis was up for it .... but they chose to string along with the WBC instead, and then spend the next many years complaining about Don King.

In light of the fact that Lewis's own manager admits that he turned down at least one "good" offer from the Bowe camp, I think the talk of "blatant ducking" needs to stop.

Bowes 'ducking' of Lewis is described pretty well in the Tyson book by Peter Heller.

Bowe dumping the belt in the bin had absolutely NOTHING to do with Lewis at. Bowe dumped it in the bin to make a statement to the WBC because they are asking him for large amounts of money to sanction his fights and he basically said screw you

Lewis team took full advantage of this and spread the word that he was doing it to duck him

    I know.
There's always two sides to these things. I'm surprised that even on this forum, the Lewis propaganda version is often taken as the truth.
There's a big myth that Lewis was ducked or avoided by the big name fighters for much of his career, and that he was treated as an 'outsider' by the boxing establishment and done no favours, or that he was on the outside because he wouldn't sign with Don King.

If anything it was the Bowe camp who had less connections and were trying to keep Don King out.Bowe and Newman might well have been idiots, but they certainly got treated roughly by the WBC, and eventually by the WBA and IBF too (I remember when Bowe lost his titles by a close decision to Holyfield he quickly drop down the ratings of alaphabet boys, dropped out altogether if I remember rightly).

I'm not saying that they didn't want an easier fight than Lewis as first defence but I've never seem much of a problem with that.

Bowe was not mentally weak. Quite the opposite, it took a lot of heart to
hang in there against Golota (2ndfight). Bowe had an elite, jab, an iron chin, the best inside game, power, loads of heart and a never say die attitude. Not to mention 6 foot 5 230plus. Haye is elusive, but wouldn't last against Bowe, not enough power or determination. We arent talking about Valuev or Chisora, this is Big Daddy. If youre name isnt Tyson or Foreman youre gonna have a hell of a night. Bowe KO 3.

I clarified the mentally weak comment further down that page, I'm not going to do so again.

As I also said in that post you quoted, Bowe had far more talent and natural potential than Haye but his habit of allowing his opponent to determin the pace and range of the fight would work against him in a fight with Haye. If Tony Tubbs can last 10 rounds, if Tyrell Briggs can last 8 rounds, if Andrew Golota can go 16 rounds, if Herbie Hide can go 6 rounds against Bowe then Haye can certainly last into the championship rounds at least - his chin is at least as good as Tubbs, Briggs and Golota and is a damn sight better than Hide's.

So the math. Bowe's habit of failing to take control of the pace and range of a fight + Haye's elusive defensive abilities and good chin = 6 rounds or more = late KO victory for Bowe or close decision on points.

    I disagree.

I think that he would fashion the top of Hayes skull into a cereal bowl.

There is no "Lewis propaganda version". You didn't mention Bowe offering Lewis 80/20 split on purpose. Bowe did avoid Lewis and everybody know it. Even Tyson avoided Lennox until he was basically forced to fight him. You are in huge denial if you think that Lewis wasn't avoided, but I'm sure you are already aware of that.

I'd favor Bowe to defeat Haye by stoppage, although I could see the scenario of Haye winning the match.

David Haye is a lot better than Herbie Hide. Bowe wins, but Haye absolutey has the punching power to put a scare into Bowe.

Tyson didn't duck Lewis. He fought Holyfield for much more money. Lewis was not highly regarded at the time, hes been koed by mcall and just squeaked past mercer

accusing Tyson of ducking Lewis to fight Holyfield is like accusing mayweather of ducking Tim Bradley to fight Manny pacqiao.

1996, nobody cared about Tyson/Lewis, everyone wanted Tyson/Holyfield hence why the fight was simply called 'Finally' and why each fighter made 30m each

guys like seldon and tucker were ranked higher than bowe, that's why Bowe said screw you to the main organisations and fought hide for the lightly regarded wbo belt. After being shafted by the wbc et al, Bowe had to chart a different course.

Lewis fans like to make this fairytale of how he was ducked. Lewis problem was, he wasn't American and he wasn't exactly Mr Personality either. Who needed Lewis when you had Bowe, Holyfield and Tyson

its like accusing jones, Hopkins and toney of ducking Joe calzaghe
