Lewis was offered better than the 80/20 split, he was made an offer that he wanted to take, and an offer than even his manager Frank Maloney admits was good .... but they didn't want to dump the WBC, so decided to string along with Don King and Jose Sulaiman.
Didn't Bowe offer Lewis the same amount that Holyfield offered Bowe? Which was, by far, the largest purse Lewis had ever gotten?
After Lewis Turns Down $11 Million, Bowe Fight Won't Happen Until '94 July 21, 1993|From Associated Press LONDON — Lennox Lewis, the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, has rejected a deal to fight Riddick Bowe for the undisputed title. "The deal was $21 million for Bowe and a 50-50 split if the final purse went above $32 million," Frank Maloney, who represents Lewis, said Tuesday. Lewis was guaranteed $11 million. "We declined that, and the Bowe fight won't happen until the summer of 1994," Maloney said. In a statement released through his manager, Rock Newman, Bowe, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Assn. champion, said Lewis is a "pitiful disgrace to the manly art of boxing. . . . Lennox Lewis is a pompous, arrogant, phony British punk who is simply afraid to fight me."
Interestingly, there's Maloney declining $11 million in July 1993 or a 50-50 split of anything over $32 million .... and yet in December 1992 his price was $5 million .... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boxing NEWSWIRE December 08, 1992|From Staff and Wire Services Rock Newman, manager for Riddick Bowe, said that mandated challenger Lennox Lewis has turned down two offers for a heavyweight championship fight. Frank Maloney, Lewis' manager, said he was offended by Newman's purse offer of $3 million for Lewis. Maloney said Lewis wants at least $5 million or 25% of the purse. Newman said Bowe's first title defense would be a television special timed to take place during halftime of the NFL's Super Bowl championship with another fight to come in March. Probable opponents for either of those fights are Alex Garcia, Michael Dokes and Alex Stewart, said Newman, who added that the third bout would be in May or June most likely against Ray Mercer. ________________________________________________________ So, somehow Lewis's WBC belt (regarded by most as a 'paper title' at the time) and the poor Tony Tucker fight (which actually if anything took the shine off the Lennox Lewis who'd KO'd Ruddock) was adjudged by Maloney to have risen his stock from at least $5 mill to more than $11-$16 million ??? And people believe that tripe about it being Bowe's camp doing all the ducking !
