When it comes to the Bowe who beat Holy I against the Lewis who beat Rahman, I pick Bowe any day. Bowe got shaken at the Olympics, but he was bouncing up and down and ready to go back fighting when the ref stopped the fight. I think Newman ruined what would have been a great trilogy. I must admit though, that though I think Bowe would have knocked Lewis cold in the first fight, I think he would have lost the other two. He just seemed to lose his taste for being sensational after winning the title. Granted, he looked pretty killer knocking Rodriquez cold and very good basically bludgeoning Hide...but overall he just wasn't the same. It was pretty killer seeing him stop Holy after being knocked down, but even there he was slipping. Holy just got caught with a shot he didn't see, and it wrecked him.
Yes Bowe is on record stating after he won the title that was kind of it for him. The desire left after that. BTW I recently scored the 2nd Holy fight for Bowe. Watched it 3 times and scored it for Bowe every time.
Have to go with Lewis considering Bowe didn't fancy it when this fight was touted, and dumped his belt and fought two turkeys instead.
I honestly don't think Holy ever did beat Bowe. But the second fight was far closer than the first. I was amazed at the time the judges didn't give Bowe the champion's benefit of a doubt. Still, I love Holyfield too, so it was alright. I agree that Bowe just didn't look the same, even in that 2nd fight. The Incredible fighter Bowe was in the 1st, kind of stepped out in the second to be "merely" really good. I think Bowe didn't really care that much in the 2nd fight. He didn't fight as though his life depended on it, and he sure looked that way in the 1st. There are many heavyweight fights I can name that have that quality, besides the abovementioned there was Louis-Schmeling II, Ali-Frazier I (mostly on Joe's side), the Thrilla (this time Ali, too), Dempsey-Willard, Foreman-Lyle, Norton-Holmes. Patterson, Liston, Tyson, Lewis, Wlad….never (and I have massive respect for all those fighters). I might be forgetting a couple of life or death heavy fights, please correct me if so.
Lewis had no mental edge over Bowe it was a premature stoppage at the Olympics watch the film! Look behind the scenes for the answers.
Watch the Olympic film again, my friend. No one got murdered. Bowe was dancing on his feet ready to fight again when the fight was ended. Even the announcers were mystified the fight got stopped, and protested the referee. Schooled.
Bowe was so obviously going to beat Lewis that his management massively short ended Lennox on purse offers and then ran away from their own Title, trying to save face by publishing a photo of Bowe dropping his belt in a dustbin. Very dignified, Champion like behaviour. Bowe was allergic to Lewis after that Olympic Final and would not go near him ever. Lewis wins easy, anytime.
Bowe all day money. Bowe hit harder than McCall. After that, the chances for Bowe slide from slim to none. By the time of Golota, Bowe gets beaten badly.
Perhaps he did say that. Eddie most likely saw Bowe's disipline and weight issues continue unchecked. There was a window right after he won the Riddick would of had a good chance. I would have made him a slight favorite then. Lewis stagnated a bit after Ruddock. His jab was pawing, his balance a little shaky. Bottom line he needed Manny and sometime to get to his full potential.
Source was an Emanual Steward interview. Would Emanual lie to boost his fighter? I really don't think so
Lennox also fought down to the level of his opposition fairly often. He felt like he didn't need to show up. He goes from destroying Rudduck in 2 and dominating Tucker to dropping the early rounds against Bruno and then getting caught against McCall. The same thing against Mercer and Rahman, he thought he could do what he wanted and didn't box smart.
