Which one of these would have won if they would have met in the ring? In the aftermath of the fight what would have become of their respective careers?:hi:
Lewis wins before they even step in the ring, early ko or wide UD. When a man's mentally crushed his gameplan goes clean out of the window. Add to this that Bowe had no head movement and moved in straight lines makes it an easy night work for Lewis. The aftermath remains true to what happened with both. Lewis becomes an ATG, Bowe goes downhill in a vicious spiral.
I seem to remember the common consensus was that Bowe was at the time the best heavyweight out there. Just always wondered what people (actually) thought about it. I agree with you on the outcome but still curious on the overall opinion.......
Lewis. It is not because he won in the amateurs (there are many examples it doesn't work that simply, as we are talking about Lewis vs Bowe it is enough to remind Biggs and Gonzalez). It is also not because Bowe preferred to trash his belt rather than defend it against Lewis (after all, he could do it for financial reasons). Bowe had quite poor offence for a top fighter. Against B-level fighters his offence made up for that. It even worked against Holy in the 1st fight - Holy strategy for most of the fight was just to go inside and trade, which generally wouldn't be bad against bigger man, but failed against an opponent who was great inside fighter with equally good chin and better punch. Still, I do not think Lewis would go for that - he would rather beat him to the punch like Golota did (although probably without attacking his nuts).
Lewis did Bowe in the Olympics, hindsight and indeed foresight suggested to me, he would of always been favoured to beat Bowe. With the exception to prove the rule (the first Holyfield fight), when the going got tough, Bowe found a way to lose; US Army, Olympic fight, Golota bouts (I know ), Holyfield rematch...
Lewis, in his first incarnation, was sprawling, right-hand happy with horrible footwork. Bowe was the consumate technician and boxer. I think that Bowe would tend to eek out a decision. I remember feeling that strongly at the time. Lewis improved vastly, out of sight. He improved enormously in my opinion, maybe more than ever fighter who was ever champion on two seperate occasions. He'd beat Bowe best for best in my opinion, but whatever happened at the Olympics, Bowe just looks better on film around about that time...it needs to be remembered that Lewis and Bowe was being lined up in Bowe's absolute prime.
well i think that a focused bowe with eddie futch in his corner might well ko lewis. if mccall, rahman or bruno could hurt lewis seriously, bowe might do it too for sure.
Prime for prime I like Lewis. However from 1992 - 1996 I like Bowe. I think If the fight happened in that range Bowe would come out the winner. I don't think their Olympic result would have been repeated. In the after math. Bowe loses to Holyfield in the Fanman bout. He was unable to get an imidiate rematch with Holyfield who fought Moorer next and lost. Moorer lost to Foreman in his next fight. Bowe would for whatever reason never get the chance to win back the championship he lost to Holyfield. He would get a rematch with Holyfield. About two years latter. Bowe would also win the WBO heavyweight championship. His balls as the ones between his legs would be confused for punching bags in two fights with Golota. In other words with bowe not much would have changed. Lewis really did not come into his own intill 1998. The loss to Bowe would not have any major impct on his career. The most major posible impact would have been if Bowe had beaten Holyfield In their second fight. His career may have looked like this. W12 Holyfield KO 9 Lewis W 12 Holyfield W 12 Michael Moorer W 12 George Foreman TKO 10 Oliver McCall McCall had just beat Lewis to earn this match up. KO 4 Frank Bruno. TKO 11 Mike Tyson L 12 Lewis L 12 Lewis Bowe retires with a record of 39-2. Lewis goes on to have his great career.
The best Bowe would always beat the best Lewis. Bowe was superior in all areas Lewis struggled in his entire career. The olympics dont mean ****, it was a bull**** stoppage anyway, but Bowe became a very good pro very quickly under Eddie Futch. Both were mentally tough fighters, so that tells me the fight winds up as a war, where Bowe showcases his superior skills of footwork and infighting. Bowe was also excellent fighting out of a clinch, so Lewis would struggle to keep Bowe tied up and under control on the inside. Bowe stops Lewis by mid fight.
I'm going with Lewis, Bowe knew Lennox has his number, he would have won the war before they even got in the ring.
93' Bowe UD's 93' Lewis, but on their best night's, I'll have to give it to Lewis in a close fight. I'm one of those people that think Lewis improved quite a bit with Steward in his corner.
