If tyson had replaced holyfield against bowe in Nov 95 how would it have played out? Wasn't bowe s greatest fight by all means but he came back from a cracking kd to ko holy. We all no what holyfield went on to do against tyson so in retrospect it was a good result for bowe. So if holy had dropped out and bowe and tyson agreed to get it on who's getting the win? Bowe at that point still on a good run as is tyson. This would have been a sell out fight I believe. Who gets it?
Bowe mid to late rounds ko Bowe was clearly past prime and a little sloppy, but still had enough to beat this version of tyson.
Tyson v Bowe in 95 .....i think that would be a great fight with there styles, result Tyson win TKO 6
There was that very short length of time when bowe was back on cracking form to the golata wins /loss. This fight would have taken place before bowe was seen as on the decline. Tyson in a similar situation where he was beaten all before him till holy. So I believe this fight would have hastened that decline for at least one of them. I think tyson would come out of this one lookin the most vulnerable since Douglas. He would have had moment s of glory hurting bowe, but riddick would fire back. And it would be bowe throwing the uppercut s doing the most damage. It will turn in to a slogging, hard drawn out fight with tyson looking more and more battered as the fight wears on. Can see a weary but still punching hard bowe Knockin tyson finally out in the tenth.
yea the gonzales fight was a good perfomance, bowe in good condition but clearly not as sharp like in his peak. foreman said after the fight that he advises all hw fighters - don't mess with riddick bowe! if riddick bowe stays in this kind of a condition, stay away from riddick bowe! (including lennox lewis)
Well at that time it seemed as if bowe was getting slowly back to his best. U would have been hard pressed to find a heavy favoured over bowe at that point.
If Bowe showed a 10th of the grit he showed against Golota he would beat post prison Tyson, once Mike got tired after a few rounds. Bowe had a lot of heart and will to win, even when past his best.
I am not convinced about Bowe's chin and ability to take big punches to the face. There is a reason why his career ended so quickly and trust me Golatta finished him, Bowe was just fine before going into the Golatta fight, there is a perception he avoided so many big punchers like Lewis, Morrison, Foreman, Bruno. Heck even Holyfield wobled him, dropped him in their fights. If Tyson connects with that face or even lands a combination, i am not convinced about Bowe's ability to recover, he doesn't dance around the ring, he doesn't tie a person up on the inside, he trades and trading with Tyson is suicidal and Tyson once he has a guy wobbled is a master finisher. I am not convinced any version of Bowe beats Tyson except for the one that showed up against Douglas.
I find it hard to agree Bowe couldn’t take a decent shot. I think people forget how good Golota was, without his mental issues he could have been an all timer, he had it all. For a severely faded Bowe to be standing up after a few rounds of taking punishment from a fresh Golota, it doesn’t bare thinking about how much heart that took, and he almost knocked the foul pole out! I wonder if post prison Tyson could dish out half that punishment, I doubt it. Bowe showed for all his faults he had a champions will that night, he was doing anything and everything in his power to win. It’s a shame he didn’t have the discipline, that seemed to accelerate his downfall rather than punishment. Even that version of Bowe would give a post prison Tyson major issues, Mike didn’t show he could deal with someone standing there and not taking no for an answer, When Holyfled did it Mike reacted like he had no idea what to do. Bowe would have been the same, he would be going at Tyson even if hurt, like he did against Golota. Mike never faced that kind of heart and will to win in his prime let alone when he was well past his best after prison. Tyson might hurt Bowe, its possible he might get a devastating combo in but I don’t see it, Bowe would survive and fire back, making Tyson question himself after not being hit properly for 4 years. Tyson post prison was done against guys with that kind of will, Mike was a phoney by that point and he got exposed quickly by a real fighter, there a reason why his career became the circus it was. It was a shame to see, I thought Tyson was back but you can’t deny what was. That Holyfield rematch tells you his mental state, you don’t beat guys like Holyfled, Lewis and Bowe when you gonna fold and throw your dummy after a few rounds. Mike was a great spectacle in his prime but I tend to be more realistic about him these days, as a fan.
Post prison Tyson was a big step down from the prime version. Bowe would have a real shot at beating him.
I agree Tyson out of prison is an ordinary fighter. But i am not really convinced about Bowe's chin at all. I don't deny that he didn't have heart but he was getting his **** kicked in both the fights where even the commentators were begging the corners to stop the fight and for Bowe to never fight again. There is one thing which is fighting heart where you come back from a difficult situation and stay in the fight and then there is getting your head and brains beat up unnecessrily. What Bowe did with Gollata was the later. His family should have intervened and stopped the rematch given the amount of damage he had taken in the first fight. But with regards to his overall career, no doubt he was incredibly talented but he never used his gifts properly. He fought too much on the inside and was not smart enough like Lennox to fight the right way for a tall rangier guy. Now, with regards to his chin, again i repeat my question, How many big punchers did he face in his entire career? It is well documented he ducked Lewis, Morrison. Tommy Morrison has apparently beaten the **** out of him sparing. Tyson's combinations are not wild combinations, we are taking about a guy with devastating power in both hands, throwing 6-10 punch combinations in 1-2 seconds and with accurate precision. Who has Bowe faced of this nature? If someone like Holyfield can wobble and even drop Bowe, if Tyson lands that Bruno 2 combination on Bowe, it will be game, set and match right there. Heck Lewis inspite of his chinny nature had the balls to step in with so many big punchers which i can definately give him credit for. On a side note, i don't know who was responsible for managing Bowe. I was shocked by the manner in which they underestimated Gollata. I believe Gollata is the one major puncher Bowe faced in his career. I have seen both the fights and the thing which strikes me is just how incredible Gollata's infighting skills are and how he is punching Bowe in the face at will, his handspeed was way better. I believe the Bowe team even accussed Gollata of being on PED's. Regardless, this was just criminal negligence and the end result was a really talented boxer suffering career ending brain damage.
Tyson ws not a very good fighter after prison. I think it would be 50/50 mostly because there is a very very good chance that bowe simply doesnt get up from a single tyson bomb. I dont see bowe avoiding tysson's big bombs for the 9+ rounds he would need to beat tyson down. Bowe went down from SINGLE shots against both golota(in the second fight) and holyfield(in the third fight) and was out on his feet for entire rounds against people who were not great finishers and gave him the opportunity to survive. Tyson knocked out guys with better chins than bowe with single punches or hurt them so badly they were gone very quickly. Tyson can pull it off with one shot even if he's losing, bowe would have to fight the perfect fight.
My point is that i am not convinced by Bowe's chin at all. A great chin can take a great shot from a big puncher and be on steady, stable legs and give the body language of still being in the fight. Everytime Bowe gets hit in the face by anybody regardless of punching power, you get the impression that you are inflicting brain damage to him. He never looked comfortable when being hit flush. Besides i don't see any big punchers on his record. The one big puncher he finally faced (criminally underestimating him), his career ended.
