I need a little help here if anyone can offer it.

Just trying to get a record of Bowe's Ring-rated opponents. I have the ABC rankings pretty much complete, but I'm not so firm on the Ring rankings.

    I have this so far:

Holyfield I - #1, he was the undisputed champ
Holyfield II - unknown, I'd assume he was around #3?
    Hide - #6
    Gonzalez - #9
    Golota II - #5

Can anyone confirm or correct these? Gonzalez was #9 for the end-of-year '94 rankings, not 100% sure come around June '95 when they fought. Similarly Golota was #5 on the end-of-year '96 rankings, but I'm not quite sure before the fight (I know he was unranked for the first one).

And are there any others I might have missed out? Coezter, or any opponent before him? Donald? Holyfield III in '95, Golota I in '96?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks :)

Pretty certain Seldon had plummeted down the WBC rankings due to the McCall loss (he was like #10 before that I think), so I'd be surprised if he was Ring ranked. He wasn't at the end of 1990.

    Tubbs unsure, think not.

Biggs most definitely not, not after the Tyson-Damiani-Mason back to back losses. Perhaps on an ABC but not Ring I think.

And does anyone also know if Larry Holmes snagged himself a Ring rating off beating Ray Mercer? Or did they only publish them once a year at the time?

The Ring ratings have been monthly since the 1920s or 1930s.

Mercer was rated top 10 by all the magazines prior to the Holmes fight, and Holmes certainly deserved to be considered a top 10 contender when he beat him.

Sometime in the early 90s I think the Ring went through a period of being closed down, maybe 6 months or more, but I cant remember exactly when. So some months will be missing, I believe.

Ferguson was probably rated after knocking off Mercer as well. Tubbs had one loss against Tyson coming into the fight. I would guess he was ranked or should have been

I'm pretty sure Ferguson and Donald were among the top 12 in the magazines.

That was April-December 1989, but there was an issue for May.

    Thanks . :good

Ok, so that wouldn't affect Bowe anyway, he didn't step up until 1990.

When Donald faced Bowe he was the #1 contender for the WBO. Buster Mathis held some USBA belt or something so he was also ranked somewhere in the top 20 in sure.

He wasn't for the 1990 year-ending annual ratings, and the next fight he had was against Bowe in April '91, that's all I can say.

I can see the argument in 'should have been', but then I think Mercer should've been Ring rated against Lewis in '96, though he wasn't.

It's just official top ten Ring ratings I'm looking for here.

Ferguson I don't know about. He had a couple alphabet rankings but I don't know about the Ring, or indeed if Mercer had kept his own Ring ranking after losing to Holmes.

Donald wasn't ranked for year ending 1993...did he have any good wins in '94 pre-Bowe?

And was Gonzalez still Ring #9 when he fought Bowe in June '95?

When you only have the annual ratings, ones at the start of the year are easier to confirm than ones later on, of course...

Not really. He beat Jeremy Williams and Bert Cooper. He was undefeated when he fought Bowe, and the fight was for two sub WBC titles so he could have possibly been in the top ten. What about Herbie Hide, he was also undefeated WBO champion when Bowe fought him, so he could have been ranked as well.

I think you'll find he was ranked at 11 or 12 before the Bowe fight.

This was prior to the Bowe fight .....

    Two unbeaten prospects.

    Also ....

I suppose Cooper was at least a half-decent trial still.

Neither man was ranked by the ring magazine when they fought Bowe. Seldon's loss to McCall, earlier that spring, knocked him right out of the ring ratings.. He might have had a low number in some of the alphabet ranks, but I don't really remember. Tyrell Biggs wasn't ranked by anybody when he fought Bowe, and hadn't been for quite some time.
