Armando Hernández Torres vs. Juan Manuel Alejado, 10 rounds @ flyweight

 

This is for the WBC Latino hundred and twelve pound title, 1st defense of Armando "Ichiro-Ozeki Alacrán" Torres. (who fought in Japan the first couple of years of his career; hence the first part of his mixed-language nickname)

 

"Pinky" Alejado is a 2-time world title challenger a division south, trying for the WBO light flyweight championship twice, unsuccessfully (losing to Donnie Nietes via UD in 2015 and then Ángel L. Acosta Gómez via KO10 in 2017).

 

Round 1

Constant pressure from Torres, doubling his jab and then swooping in with uppercuts on the waist of Alejado. Backing up and swatting frantically with long hooks thrown in wide arcs, the challenger is unable to get the respect of his elder. (Alejado is 36, old enough for the fly range, but Torres will turn 40 in ten months).

Round 2

Torres is bullying Alejado from pillar to post, tearing up the body when near enough. Alejado tries switching to southpaw and swatting out at Torres with hooks from that stance, but with no greater effect than from orthodox. Torres is relentlessly pumping out straights from Alejado's throat down to his breadbasket in pursuit and then looping bombs into his sides as he skates the ropes. Alejado with defensive flurries delivered from a turtle shell while skittering away, but never setting his feet.

Round 3

Alejado is starting to connect more now, taking his time and taking aim with his jab, letting Torres walk nearly upon him and then zapping him with a pinpoint left on the mouth. Alejado now starts dropping in rights on the navel to slow Torres' advance. The next right cross after Torres has absorbed several of those rights on the body surprises him, climbing up and meeting him chin-on, jolting him back a step. Torres keeps marching forward but is overreaching, missing and being made to pay by Alejado. Nice left hook on the body at the bell from Torres, but Alejado loops a right into his brow at the same time.

Round 4

Alejado is quick to establish his rhythm as soon as they answer the bell, staying just beyond the reach of Torres' jabs and sandbag rights leaning forward, and popping him in the nose with sharp downward jabs on the backfoot. Alejado is cutting tight circles around Torres and countering in multiples with light straights and then flitting away on his toes before Torres can take a hefty slice at his midsection. Torres attempting to run him down and lunge for the body with roundhouses, just not able to head off Alejado, grazing at best.

Round 5

Alejado is trying his same tactics from the fourth, but finds a reinvigorated Torres more difficult to evade. Lots of herky-jerky movement from the champion, making himself difficult to predict as he uses erratic patterns of leans to either side and yanks upright on the way in, pawing with jabs and then sending big flailing morning-star rights at the head of Alejado. Lots of defensive maneuvering by Alejado, barely escaping some of Torres' charges, and not getting many counters in.

The unofficial scorecard of the commentator for Boxeo Telemundo has it 48-47 Alejado, giving Ichiro-Ozeki Alacrán the first & fifth.

 

Round 6

Alejado is able to regain some control, snapping Torres' head back with his jab again. Torres is still flooring the gas pedal, and consequently getting his licks in, doing particularly effective work upstairs when he boomerangs in that right hand on a deep curve - but Alejado is using nonstop lateral movement so he's able to ride all of Torres' blows, while out-landing him significantly with quick jabs and straight combos in a blur.

Round 7

Alejado is slowing down just enough for Torres' wing-and-prayer uppercuts to start rubbing against his trunks' façade. About half of those stray low - but innocently so, as Torres does seem to be aiming for the abdomen of Alejado, putting an upward trajectory on them from afar but miscalculating by an inch or two. A few warnings from the ref but Torres keeps spamming those uppercuts while chasing Alejado, continuing to land a mix of legal and low blows. Alejado too disconcerted and panicked (and/or hurt) from both to really focus on throwing any combos.

Round 8

Alejado manages to just about find the right jab at the right moment to fend Torres off and prevent himself from getting trapped on the ropes - but Torres keeps pressing in. Uppercut & hook by Torres have Alejado in trouble. Massive combos from Alejado now, digging extremely deep into his reserves of energy and making a bobble-head of Torres. Both men wind up on huge blows in the final half-minute and the result is a vicious head clash when they uncork at the same time. Both are BADLY hurt by the butt. The ref gives them some refractory time but they both shake it off quickly in a show of machismo. Time in. Both swinging wildly, obviously dizzied. Both spraying big hooks and missing at point blank.
