"Fino" Ruiz has lost in two of his three biggest steps up in class so far - but the latest, in December, was via close UD to former champ Hasegawa, and before that he upset 19-1-1 prospect Raul Horacio Centeno (no relation to Hugo Centeno, Jr. - different nationality altogether).

Montes de Oca you may recall from his only ever night of meaningful action - being fed to (and devoured violently by) Yuriorkis Gamboa in his rebound after the Crawford loss, as co-feature to Cristian Mijares vs. Lester Medrano on Fox Deportes. He bravely got up from several knockdowns, but otherwise didn't really do much to acquit himself as belonging in a televised bout, much less sharing the ring with a Gamboa.

Good. With everybody "pulling out" like prom night *** I thought boxing would be done for the weekend. WS of Boxing is on tomorrow too.

Yeah but this and Matthysse vs. Mrdjenovich II as the best (only, actually) offerings tonight makes for a pretty weak Friday.

...and tomorrow isn't exactly great. Flanagan vs. Matthews, Brähmer vs. Gutknecht II, and Zab Judah versus some janitor...that's it. :-(

    Round 1

Montes de Oca is circling and tossing a light jab at Ruiz, pumped from his shoulder out towards Ruiz but halted about halfway to its target. Montes de Oca is keeping his body cheated almost 90° rightward, keeping his chin down, bouncing on his toes, giving Ruiz as little opportunity as possible. Ruiz is eschewing his own jab, sliding his lead foot in and thrusting it where he can between Montes de Oca's legs, then ripping left hooks on the body while thus posted up. Montes de Oca is dancing away before Ruiz can get in more than a couple. Long right hand by Montes de Oca, blocked.

10-9 Ruiz, fairly even and uneventful.

    Round 2

Montes de Oca is circling and jabbing carefully, but Ruiz is dropping his left shoulder and getting to him low scooping hooks. Right hand up top by Ruiz and Montes de Oca is hurt. Montes de Oca shells up as Ruiz tees off, everything hitting gloves. Montes de Oca dances away, depositing a long, light lead right straight down the pipe on the backfoot and dinging Ruiz between the eyes but not slowing him. Ruiz is feinting with the right glove, making as if an overhand right is coming, but keeping it hovering by his chin, looking to deal his damage with the left. Very careful movement by Montes de Oca.

    10-9 Ruiz

    20-18 Ruiz

Yeah, definitely can't say Jooe came to lie down here tonight - but I do have a feeling that Fino is going to land something big sooner or later and put him away. Every time Ruiz Machuca gets through cleanly it rattles Montes de Oca pretty badly.

    Round 3

Montes de Oca is scoring with the counter 1-2 pretty well backing up. Ruiz is floating his own jab, on an incline, wide of the bulls-eye. Montes de Oca getting the best of things at distance and turning Ruiz constantly in the middle of the ring, avoiding the corners. Ruiz stomps his way in and clips Montes de Oca on the chin with a right hand, sending him backpedaling quickly, but misses the follow-up left hook as Montes de Oca ducks while receding from his path.

10-9 Ruiz, barely - stole it with the big shot just before the bell.

    30-27 Ruiz
