Edgar Ortega vs. Pablo Munguia, 10 rounds @ welterweight

 

This is for the interim WBO Latino 147lb title, 1st defense of Edgar "Nene" Ortega.

He is venturing into his challenger's home city of Distrito Federal, where grizzled southpaw elder statesman Pablo "Sepulterera" Munguia has enjoyed a lot of success and scored a fair share of upsets.

 

Round 1

Munguia is bowing in, letting Ortega plant hooks into the side of his own head while plunging with right jabs on the belly. Ortega is circling away, flicking out a left jab to deflect Munguia's right when it climbs up in multiples in a slowly rolled-out door-rapping motion. Ortega hooks off the backfoot, skating along the ropes. Light body touches by Munguia, backhanding the right jab up into Ortega's belly and looking for a left hand but not finding it as Ortega moves.

Good action opener.

 

Round 2

Munguia advances, winging big left hooks up top and leaning forward to drub the body with straights and backhands, his few pawing right jabs picked off by Ortega's left. Ortega backs up and clubs at the back of Munguia's head with hard left hooks, setting his feet and dropping his weight for emphasis. Ortega is sent into a face-plant while bowed forward as Munguia jabs him in the hip after taking a hook across the rear of the skull while bent over with Ortega looming over him off-balance. Not ruled a knockdown, though. Munguia keeps advancing, whipping hooks up top, clipping Ortega's shoulder or rat-tail if touching him at all.

Round 3

Munguia is hitting the body and backing Ortega up, body folded up at 90°, pitched forward. Hooks up top by Munguia when Ortega starts to move straight back and shell up, scoring on the champ's temples. Ortega is having a hard time containing Munguia, squeezing his arms together around the base of his neck and pushing down on his backside to no avail. Munguia just keeps shoving him further across the ring, hitting the body and letting blind overhands sail up into his face. Munguia ignores every counter jab and hook Ortega drops on him.

Round 4

Munguia ram-horns Ortega into a corner and whacks either side of the body. Ortega leans down into him to push him off and their heads clash badly. Ortega is cut, and checked out. Time in. Big hooks by Munguia on the march. Several are caught on the arms or wedged under the armpit with Ortega dancing along the ropes waving his elbows out like paddles, but a few thud home on his throat or graze his chin. Ortega lands triples jabs on the backfoot, in between the eyes of Munguia flush, but can't deter him. Munguia comes in low, attacking the body, and Ortega pushes down on him.

That's why I'm doing a RBR and not asleep like I sorely ought to be. :yep

 

Round 5

Munguia is jabbing the body and looping the right hand up into the jaw of Ortega. Munguia sends a tiring Ortega reeling with a big swerving right! Overhands by Munguia, pressuring nonstop behind the dull stomach-ache of his light, busy right jab on the abs. Ortega is skipping away from the much shorter, older, and flabbier man, the wind sapped from his sails by the consistent sneaky body work and seeing a few stars from those right hands up top, finding him whenever his gloves drop and he moves backward in straight lines. Ortega stops and fights in spurts, mostly in the corners and only until he frees himself with straight flurries on the unblinking face of Munguia.

The unofficial card of the Boxeo Telemundo commentator has it 48-47 Ortega. Strangely, they gave him the fifth.
