Aguilar is pressing into Diaz, getting his arms wrapped around his back as Diaz tries for hooks and uppercuts but winds up too much and misses his cues. Aguilar is ducking and slinking outside and then coming back in with body shots and jabs up top. Aguilar's nose is leaking again. Diaz is yet to land a power punch flush on Aguilar's head this round. Uppercuts to the body by Aguilar, then bowing down and rubbing his face into Diaz's ribs. More body shots by Aguilar. Diaz has his back to the ropes and is trying to uppercut his way free. Left uppercut to the sternum by Aguilar. Left jab push to the head by Aguilar. Diaz ducks and rolls in but doesn't follow up, cautious. Aguilar flurries into his face and circles to his left.

The commentators sound a bit surprised at the decision. Of course, they only gave Diaz one round.

 

Gabriel Acosta vs. Antonio Lopez, 4 rounds @ bantamweight

 

Lopez must be a literal same-day replacement, because Acosta's opponent listed on Boxrec was supposed to be 3-10-1 Gustavo Sotomayor.

 

Acosta has the black gloves; Lopez red.

(otherwise there is no way to distinguish them as both have blue trunks with double white stripe trim...and both have the same build, complexion and haircut...)

 

Round 1

Acosta is throwing lead left hooks and splitting through Lopez's guard with his right upper. Big combinations by Acosta pressing in, going to head and body. Lopez counters with a right uppercut off the ropes and dances around Acosta on his toes. Jab to the chest and uppercut to the throat by Acosta, pinning Lopez into a corner. Straight volley by Lopez, a smokescreen, then reaching out and pushing Acosta off with both arms. Acosta walks through a combination to keep muscling Lopez on the ropes.

Round 2

Acosta has Lopez tilted into the ropes and is plugging away with uppercuts to the body. Lopez is finding him wide open for counter hooks and uppercuts to the face with both hands. Acosta keeps stabbing the body and then rocks Lopez with a pair of left hooks on the jaw. Acosta is pressing forward all the time, but the leather is flowing pretty equally between them in both quantity and forcefulness. Both are eating some wicked uppercuts.

Round 3

Double jab by Lopez. Body shots towel-snapped in with both hands by Lopez, staying in the pocket with Acosta. Lopez is actually initiating the exchanges now, landing hooks to head and body and being first and last. Acosta seems to be taking the round off, relatively, although he is still hurling bombs almost nonstop. Just a bit eased off the gas pedal now. Could be gassed. Lopez is taking full advantage, pouring hook after hook around the far side of Acosta's gloves to brush his ears.

Tell you what, for being as short notice as it gets Lopez is game as hell...and has been looking damn near the undefeated prospect's equal all the way so far here. (I'm not sure Lopez's record as he isn't the listed opponent and I've not had a moment to look him up amongst the many boxers who probably share his very common name - but he was almost certainly brought in as cannon fodder and is anything but...)

 

Round 4

Acosta is reaching out and lobbing hooks limply into Lopez's body. Hooks to the face by Lopez. Left and right lashes on the grill by Lopez as he steps back. Acosta throws more arm-weary slaps to the body and steps in with a big uppercut snapping Lopez's head back. Lopez answers with more hooks on the chin. Toe to toe, slow motion warfare. Uppercut by Acosta. Left hook by Lopez. Weak body shots by Acosta.
