Jonathan Oquendo vs. Guillermo Avila, 12 rounds @ featherweight

 

Round 1

Avila is waiting on the outside, rolling his right fist in water-wheels around his cheek. Oquendo puts out a high 1-2. Avila steps back and jogs quickly left while countering with a hook as Oquendo puts up the 1-2 again, both connecting on the head. Avila is backed into a corner where Oquendo slaps him on the face with a left hook while grinding his face into Avila's chest. Avila chops down with both hands and rushes off the ropes moving laterally. Jab and clubbing right ducking in by Oquendo. Avila leans down on Oquendo and pushes off with his left forearm. They hold and hit, Avila with a cuffing right and Oquendo with hard slapping left hooks up top.

Round 2

Avila is jabbing the body and backing Oquendo up. Left hooks leaping to the left by Oquendo, feet not set as he throws. Long jabs by Oquendo, falling short or grazing the chin of Avila as he comes forward and waves his right glove down to intercept the odd jab, snapping his own out at the faraway and quickly lowered head of Oquendo. Jabs poked into the guard from outside by Oquendo. Right hand lead by Avila, falling short. BIG left uppercut by Avila near the end of the round, catching Oquendo on the bottom of the chin as he circles by the ropes and knocking him back into them. Oquendo recovers and circles, jabbing.

Round 3

Oquendo is drilling his jab into Avila's forehead and then falling in with hammering rights. Avila waits and rolls his gloves around each other, tentative. Avila lunges with a 1-2 and Oquendo slips it with his back sliding along the ropes. Big hooks loaded up by Oquendo to catch Avila taking a hesitant step in. Oquendo hits mostly arm, but with heavy enough impact to put Avila on the backfoot and make him rethink coming forward. Oquendo is circling to his right now, leading abruptly with big wide quick left hooks and mixing right hands on the chin in with them.

Round 4

Oquendo is stalking and stretching out his left jab, not finding the head of the ducking and bobbing and laterally moving Avila. Sharp long jabs by Avila. Lots of distance given by Avila, propelling away before setting to fire counter jabs when Oquendo creeps into hooking range. Oquendo grinds into Avila and burrows into him with both forearms, pushing him onto the ropes. Avila backs him off with an uppercut. Big right hand lead by Avila bopping Oquendo atop the head as he ducks by the ropes.

Round 5

Avila runs out and sticks a couple of hard jabs at Oquendo, who ducks and slips. Uppercut inside by Avila, dodged. BIG COUNTER LEFT HOOK ON THE PIVOT BY OQUENDO; AVILA DOWN HARD! Only thirty seconds in, Avila shaken. He rises and bravely jumps toward Oquendo throwing overhands and wild uppercuts dragged from by his kidneys. Oquendo peels out and circles away, conserving energy and not looking for the finish. Wild hook by Avila jumping in. Oquendo ties him up. BIG 1-2 by Oquendo another. Avila is stunned but keeps moving forward. Chopping right on the jaw by Oquendo, finally leaning forward to grind into Avila since clean punches on the face aren't slowing him. Avila is jabbing at the body and searching for Oquendo's head with long overhands, slow and arm-weary. Oquendo is backing up and pushing out with his left palm to block Avila's wild rights while countering with his left.

Round 6

Oquendo is putting in the 1-2 from outside. BIG leaping bolo by Avila, caught on the lowered right arm of Oquendo as he backs up and counters with a jab. Counter rights backing up by Oquendo as Avila jumps in with hooks. Overhand right on the neck and left hook ducking in by Oquendo. They circle and jab at medium range. Avila is leading with the right hand delivered straight from above his shoulder, bowing forward to put his full weight into it. Oquendo dips by the ropes and circles around him. HARD clubbing shots by Oquendo pushing Avila onto the ropes, bang on the chin. Avila doesn't blink. Hooks at the body by Oquendo. Avila hooks down at his head, but Oquendo backs out in a crouch. They move together and grind forearms, pressing in tight. Uppercuts by Avila, smothered. Oquendo backs out and then jumps in with slashing hooks across the belly. Wild 1-2 by Avila chasing Oquendo into a corner. Oquendo pushes inside and ties up.

Round 7

Oquendo is countering with straight right hands as Avila comes in hooking high. Oquendo dives in and clinches, regrouping after having hopped all over the ring evading and countering. Oquendo is now leading, backing Avila up with the right hand. Avila starts to stubbornly walk forward again, dropping in a few right hands on Oquendo's chest. Oquendo is flipping up the right hand and then backing out, staying low. Avila is throwing wild left and right overhands, lots of elbows on the follow-through. Oquendo has some bruising on his right eye and cheekbone, worsening rapidly. Cuffing hooks by Avila, Oquendo ducking past them and tying up, just getting dusted across the back of the head. Lead left uppercut inside by Oquendo. Right uppercut on the stomach by Oquendo. Wild flurry by Avila, Oquendo ducking it and grabbing onto his waist as Avila spins himself around.
