Boxeo Telemundo: Jonathan Oquendo vs. Guillermo Avila RBR

Round 8

Oquendo is bullying Avila onto the ropes, throwing hooks with his head down. Avila tries shoveling an uppercut into Oquendo's face using the ropes for extra leverage but Oquendo is able to catch most of it on the left shoulder and bicep and pin Avila to the ropes momentarily. Avila jabs and flaps down with the right as Oquendo repeatedly rams into him and ties up, hooking the body in the clinch and on the way in. Avila backs up and is caught by double jabs and left hooks. Double right uppercut by Oquendo, getting into Avila's chest at submersible depths. Oquendo is flicking jabs at the body and threatening with the right hand, making Avila scurry into a circling pattern. Oquendo dives in, shouldering into Avila once more. Lots of elbows and incidental butts up close. Oquendo's swelling and bruising on the right side of his face is worsening, but Avila now has similar damage over both eyes.

There has been no one direct kind of slamming headbutt, just lots of bumping and scraping contact between their skulls moving in and out of clinches or shoving contests on the inside.

 

Round 9

Oquendo is looked at by the ringside physician as the ref calls for an examination. Cleared. Oquendo is hugging the ropes, trotting in either direction, not letting Avila get any offense set. Oquendo jabs and jumps in to grab. Ugly. Lead right by Avila, picked off by Oquendo's left. Oquendo turns his entire body to slip an Avila 1-2, then flails down with a right hand behind Avila's back and holds. Oquendo is taking slide-steps outside, nearly into a corner, but quickly moves to his left and taps a triple jab off Avila's chin. Oquendo is grinding headfirst into Avila's chest and hooking the body, keeping under Avila's swatting attacks.

Round 10

Oquendo is dancing on the outside, using the full ring. Avila jabs and brings the right down from overhead. Big counter hooks by Oquendo, backing up with his arms low and ducking or pitching forward to shove or clinch when Avila closes in. Avila sticks a jab in and finds Oquendo's nose but gets backed up with a hook from a crouch. Oquendo is dancing around the ring again and bounces himself off the ropes to stick a jab on Avila's belt line. Oquendo is circling to his right and clinches when Avila starts to open up. Double jab jumping in, right hand behind the ear by Oquendo as they nearly pass right by each other.

Round 11

Oquendo is throwing hard right hand leads and left hooks up top, all while backing away with a low base. Avila is coming in behind a long and lazy jab, putting together wide sweeping hooks and fishing-line right hands. Oquendo moves in firing decoy shots and ties up until the ref orders a break. Oquendo presses in with a high guard, using his arms to plow Avila into the ropes as Avila tries piercing the guard with uppercuts to no avail. Clinch. Looping right by Avila, glancing. Oquendo ducks in and grabs. Very messy. 1-2 by Avila, partly stuffed with Oquendo ducking in and raising his arms up by his face but scoring nonetheless. Double jab and wild right hand by Oquendo coming up off his toes, landing and clinching immediately. Break. Double jab by Oquendo, ducking in front of Avila. Right hand on the back of the head by Avila. Oquendo straightens up and lands a right hand and left hook pushing Avila onto the ropes. Uppercuts by Avila pushing Oquendo into a corner. Clinch. Left hook doubled up to face and body by Avila. Counter hook from a crouch by Oquendo, making Avila's back leg quiver before quickly recovering in time for the bell.

Round 12

Oquendo is jabbing the body and dropping away from Avila's long right hands. Oquendo turns southpaw and flicks several right jabs backhanded into Avila's body. Oquendo is dancing around beyond the range of Avila's right hand and hook. Oquendo returns to orthodox and jabs into mid-range, then rushes and presses against Avila to kill some time. Oquendo backs out and baits Avila, countering with hooks as Avila comes in with power flurries. Oquendo turns Avila into the ropes with a big hooking counter. They embrace at the bell as Avila is still recovering his balance from nearly spilling through the ropes.
