Matthew Villanueva vs. Daniel Lozano, 12 rounds @ super flyweight for the WBO Latino title (1st defense of Villanueva)

 

The commentators seemed to just be presenting this as being episodic of the classic Mexican vs. Puerto Rican boxing rivalry, although both kids are U.S. born and raised, from California and Florida respectively (Villanueva is of Mexican descent, and Lozano traces his roots to PR)

 

Round 1

Villanueva is jabbing and tossing in the 1-2 from an upright position without giving up his advantage in height. Lozano circles a few steps in either direction and tries jabbing up at Villanueva from the flanks. Villanueva circles off the ropes with a check hook as Lozano steps in. Combos by Villanueva staying in close and laying on Lozano before he can open up. Counter hook by Villanueva on the inside. Clinch. Both rip hooks with their free hands, climbing from butt to shoulderblades. Villanueva leans in and flurries into Lozano's ribs. They step apart and Lozano crashes in a right hand up top, partly blocked. Villanueva jabs under Lozano's extended right forearm. Big left hook by Lozano, mostly caught on the back of Villanueva's glove. Left hook by Villanueva.

Round 2

Villanueva is jabbing Lozano into the ropes and holding up close, hitting Lozano in the sides with his freed left hand after wriggling it loose. Left hook by Lozano stepping back and connecting solidly on the chin. Villanueva presses in and grinds down on Lozano. They swap hooks and uppercuts to the body. Lozano is lowering himself for even more leverage to try lifting Villanueva off his feet as Villanueva coils himself around Lozano and keeps tapping him on either side with the flat edge of his fists. Villanueva walks Lozano down without a jab, leaning deeply to his right to slip under Lozano's jab, nearly backing him into the ropes before the bell.

Round 3

Villanueva lands several jabs on the way in and then begins to barter shot for shot on the inside, offering uppercuts to the chest for hooks up on his temple. Villanueva steps outside and lands a left hook to the head. Lozano is scoring his to the body. Villanueva is moving inside and out, seemingly undecided on what range he prefers. Lozano catches him in transition at mid-range with a HUGE left hook, rocking Villanueva. Lozano follows up with more hooks, wide and not terribly fast but timed with Villanueva's tipping motions and well aimed. Villanueva swerves his way through the round getting hit with every third hook or so.

Round 4

Villanueva is jabbing and following Lozano around the ring, push-stepping laterally to keep up with his zigzagging. 1-2 by Villanueva. Lozano ducks back to roll under the 1-2 but gets buzzed anyway. Lozano is taking break compared to his effort in the previous round. Villanueva is doing all the scoring with his jab on the outside in pursuit or circling wide and sweeping in hook combos until Lozano shoots both arms past his chest and pulls him into a clinch.

Villanueva is looking so far like the far more complete fighter overall, but still with a host of flaws...and Lozano has landed the single best punch of the night.

 

Round 5

Villanueva is landing hard combinations, keeping Lozano at full arm's length and leading with hooks on the face with drilling crosses behind them. Villanueva is making Lozano spin in place and keeping the leather pouring on him. Lozano picks off what he can and patiently waits for his spot and lands a big left hook two minutes in, slowing but not halting Villanueva. More combos by Villanueva, exploiting his advantage in reach. Jabs and uppercuts, with rights clubbing down on Lozano's guard to pin his left glove to his head and prevent it from moving elsewhere. Very precise attack by Villanueva, breaking Lozano down by dismantling his defenses from safely beyond where he can hit back.
