Rómulo Koasicha y Guillermo Ávila, 12 rounds @ featherweight

 

This is for the vacant Mexican 126lb title, which has only been contested thrice in the last four years.

 

Round 1

Koasicha is circling left and flinching away from the long jabs and sweeping hooks of Avila. Koasicha is stepping in, planting a jab on Avila's temple, and getting chased out with clubbing rights high on the face as he bends his neck to roll with them, just a half-second too late with his reflexes. Avila is the aggressor, whipping down upon Koasicha's backside with hooks and looping & overhand rights. Koasicha is curling into a ball at mid-range after shooting the jab and becoming tentative when Avila counters with multiple wide punches. Koasicha starts to pick his spots with the short right hand, in, up sharply and then down in a vaulting motion into Avila's face. Nice finish by Koasicha.

Round 2

Koasicha is scoring well downstairs now, pushing Avila back with uppercuts a few inches above the belt line and then jabbing to set up more body uppers. Ávila is ripping the right hand through, bashing Ávila's guard to splinters and then pumping a few more in to make oblique contact with the lowered face of a rattled and now defensive-minded Koasicha. Ávila is winding up and throwing hard looping rights from too far out. Koasicha is dancing around him, snapping turns, evading & throwing pot shot jabs. Left hook by Ávila staggers an off-balance Koasicha onto his heels just before the beel.

Round 3

Ávila is cracking down on Koasicha's potato with heavy clubbing rights from afar. Koasicha is unable to fend him off with anything, unwilling to punch in combination and mostly inclined to jab. Koasicha tries pushing his full weight into the jab, aiming it on Ávila's core to knock the wind from him or at least knock him back a step, but Ávila soldiers through and keeps laying right hands on Koasicha. Nice body work by Koasicha, introducing a double left hook downstairs. Clinch. More hooks by Koasicha, picking up speed, affecting his opponent more in the lower hemispheres. BIG overhand counter right by Ávila with his back against the ropes, however, flush.

Round 4

Ávila is getting pinned on the ropes. Koasicha alternately shoeshines and then wrecking-***** the body with big uppercuts. Short rights on the face now by Koasicha. Ávila is proving ineffective with so little space to work, looking a bit claustrophobic. Koasicha is keeping a turtle shell on the way in, using efficient (but not overly quick footwork) and movement above the waist to make Ávila miss all his desperate counters whilst being pursued. Long uppercut by Ávila, missing as Koasicha simultaneously takes a step and leans backward.

Round 5

Ávila is hooking on the backfoot, catching the chin of Koasicha as the latter comes in with uppercuts behind the jab. Both are landing in the exchanges, both scoring eye-catching punches and both reeling but never seeming too badly hurt, both always quick to retaliate in short bursts. Ávila is backed into a corner by a series of right hands up top and left hooks on the flank. Ávila is wilting!!! Ávila wobbly! More hooks on the body from Koasicha. Rights up top, lefts downstairs - rapido, rapido! Ávila finally succumbs, down to his knees in the corner! He is up in a hurry and pays the price, Koasicha strapping him across the cheek with a flush left hook. Ávila is fighting back hard, catching his 2nd wind and drilling in a hard right hand on Koasicha's guard.

Round 6

Ávila is stalked into the ropes, where he lays in ambush, springing at Koasicha with hooking flurries before receding from the Ford logo in center ring. Koasicha puts the pressure on behind that high tight guard, collecting Ávila's throwaway jabs and waiting until he's within range to prod with his own and sink those killer left hooks around the liver area. Koasicha lands a few more of those left rips downstairs. Ávila winces and does a skipping trot away from him while clutching his side. Koasicha is on a mission now - jabbing rapidly in multiples at the face of Ávila, then switching to body hooks up close when Ávila stumbles into the ropes and traps himself. Ávila shows incredible resiliency not going down, as several hooks have him hurt badly in this round and affect his legs visibly.

Round 7

Koasicha swaps turns coming forward with Ávila, both starting out with a fluttering jab on the way in but selling out with power shots, momentum carrying them into the countering strike zone. Both are more disposed toward eluding than countering when not the one attacking, however. Tentative, chippy round - until Koasicha lands a HUGE LEFT HOOK that legitimately plunks Ávila on his butt near the ropes - this one not a knee-job. 12 seconds left in the round. Follow up flurry by Koasicha - and it seems the ref jumps in to rescue Ávila!! - or he could just be separating them because of the bell! - we have no way of knowing, poorly timed commercial break! :twisted:
