For those wondering, Joan Guzman came in 8.5lbs overweight for the scheduled interim WBA 140lb title clash with Mosquera and was forbidden to move forward by the WBA after coming to agreement in principle with Mosquera's camp to proceed and pay Mosquera a portion of his purse with only Mosquera eligible to get the belt.

So instead we get this non-title 10-rounder with 36 year old Rivera coming off two losses on under 24 hours notice.

 

In traditional Boxeo Telemundo fashion, the main event comes first. (usually followed by the undercard...err, overcard...)

 

Round 1

Mosquera is cracking Rivera across the chin with big right hands. Rivera stilts on rickety stork legs to either side putting out jabs and wide hooks. Mosquera has everything scouted, reacting with in-and-out and up-and-down movement defensively and timing his right hand to land flush at will.

Round 2

Mosquera is tossing heavy right hands up top. Rivera jabs his way inside and takes some plunging shots as Mosquera ducks back. HARD RIGHT TO THE BODY BY RIVERA. That got the crowd's attention more than Mosquera's. Rivera is pushed to the ropes and swept across the bottom lip with a looping right. Rivera circles and jabs over Mosquera's head. Uppercuts rolled in by Mosquera. Rivera hurls in a right hand from behind the back and Mosquera rolls with it but doesn't have the reflexes to completely avoid it. Right hand by Mosquera pressing in on the larger man. Mosquera keeps his guard high and tight as he presses Rivera to the ropes. Hook to the body by Rivera. Big overhand right by Mosquera. Rivera is hurt and holding. Saved by the bell.

Round 3

Mosquera is up on his tiptoes advancing with hard left hooks and right hands fixed on Rivera's chin. Rivera is shoving off with his forearms and scrambling for space. Rivera is pushed to the ropes and waits for Mosquera with a flurry of uppercuts before folding his long arms back up beneath his chin. Big triple hook by Mosquera, leaping in and bashing at Rivera's guard.

Round 4

Mosquera is whipping in hooks with either fist, denting Rivera's midsection. HARD whacks about six inches above the kidney on either side. Rivera turns into them, attempting to let Mosquera's gloves slide up his back or possibly deflect off his elbows - to no avail. Mosquera keeps pounding the body and hitting Rivera in the face when his arms drop. A few counters bravely flicked out by Rivera, but he is getting thrashed.

Round 5

Mosquera is encroaching with the bob-and-weave peekaboo stance, loading up power hooks to the body and right hands up top as Rivera lies in wait standing up straight and tall. Mosquera doubles Rivera over after walking through his jab and putting a combination up into his skull. The ref calls for a break as Mosquera grinds into him and gets held. Rivera is walked across the ring and warned for reaching out to grab Mosquera behind the head. Big left hooks whipped up by Mosquera. Uppercuts and overhands by Mosquera, working in consecutive right hands and looking to close the show - or at least provide one for the fans.
