Everything Vazquez's team wanted from tonight, was delivered.

Avila is green but strong like a bull and has the right instincts for a fighter if not any of the polish. We'll see more of him, eventually. (which is my same takeaway for both Oscar Escandon and Felipe Orucuta, recently)

 

Israel Vazquez vs. Felipe Rivas, 6 rounds @ flyweight

 

Round 1

Vazquez is ducking in and catching jabs on the gloves, then hooking with Rivas inside. Rivas goes into a shoulder roll and toys with Vazquez a bit, jabbing him and then shimmying to dodge shots, tying up a bit, frustrating the kid.

Round 2

Vazquez is hooking the body as Rivas gets in low and close and tries clinching. Rivas is rocked back by a hook but does a little fake wobbling and then shoots in a few stinging counters to show he was only playing possum as Vazquez rushes in. Body shot by Rivas winding down. Vazquez catches him with a hard jab leaning outside with his chin up. Vazquez misses a big right hand over Rivas' back and walks past him. Jabs traded. Clubbing right by Vazquez, rolled underneath by Rivas.

Round 3

Vazquez is jabbing through as Rivas leans forward and flurries at him. Vazquez sneaks a hook in while Rivas is punching and stuns him. Vazquez is waiting for Rivas in the center of the ring or by the ropes, wherever he stops moving, and dropping right hands on him when Rivas worms in low throwing body shots. Overhand right and two left hooks by Rivas, taking control briefly. Right uppercut by Vazquez bounced off Rivas' temple as he leans forward.

Round 4

Vazquez is jabbing and slicing at Rivas with the right hand down low. Rivas is staying in close and throwing uppercuts. BIG left hook on a break by Vazquez, perhaps not having yet realized the ref was calling for one. Rivas gives a sportsmanlike nod and then steps back inside to keep working the uppercut from his modified shoulder roll stance. Another big hook by Vazquez. Rivas is rocked but recovers instantaneously. Jabs by Rivas stepping in, making swimming stroke motions with his arms in between. Hook by Vazquez misses.

Yeah. Both are essentially just "seek and destroy" types - although Escandon did have a nice amateur career and of course was an Olympian...and is further along in his pro development as well.

 

Round 5

Vazquez is landing hard body shots on Rivas but is there for his sneaky uppercut torqued in with full body rotation after slipping punches. Rivas is stepping forward, rolling under Vazquez's jab and landing his. Rivas reaches out with the left hook and brushes Vazquez's peach fuzz with it. 1-2 by Vazquez, grazing as Rivas pulls back and bends low.

Round 6

Vazquez is pinching Rivas' skull between his palms when Rivas ducks in close, then pushing off and jabbing. Rivas pulls out and gets hooked in the face. Rivas is pressing in with the overhand right, walking through big left hooks and occasionally getting knocked off-kilter but still keeping his balance and never getting pushed back. Vazquez dances around him and resets, taking a breather. Jabs by Vazquez, briefly turning southpaw and flicking the right jab before immediately switching back. Rivas follows Vazquez into a corner and has his head snapped back by a left hook. Vazquez pops a jab and hops to his right. Rivas shoves him into a corner and taps the body while smothered in against him.
