If you immediately dismiss a boxers statement about who hit harder because they pick a guy they beat, then either A) youve never boxed before B) you think power is everything C) you have to dismiss all statements in regards to whose better than who in any category (speed, timing, strength etc) D) all of the above. Shouldnt have to explain A) and B), but if youve been in a fight its absolutely possible for fighter A to hit harder than fighter B and come up short. And again, if youve ever been in a ring you know with any decent experience that some guys can hit hard as hell but lack in other areas and may not get as many stoppages as some other fighters (wether its timing, speed, stamima, etc). People who cant wrap their heads around this clearly think power is everything. They cannot fathom that you could peform worse than another guy if you have a significant power advantage. And usually guys like that are the biggest casuals or havent actually been in a fight. Im not saying you cant have an opinion if youve never fought, but when you make statements like these it really stands out and makes it hard to take you seriously with a warped (and incorrect) perception of reality. And ill say it again: not talking to people who dismiss quotes altogether, just saying you cant pick and choose info to suit your agenda. Either accept all statements or none at all.
Hey buddy I know you mean well but let's try and give it a rest with these punching power threads man. No hard feelings I just think there are much richer aspects of boxing that you have opinions about and I would be very interested in reading them.
Boxers quotes are interesting ,but hardly conducive to arriving at a definitive verdict on this subject. The Abe Simon "quote ,"is a case in point. I haven't seen a primary source for it but ,assuming he said it,would it persuade any objective poster that Walcott hit harder than Joe Louis? And,if he did, how come he couldn't floor the, easy to tag, defensively porous Simon whereas Louis ko'd him twice? Is there anyone on this forum who thinks power is the," be and end all " of boxing? . If it were, George Chaney,Charley White,Aurelio Herrera,Joe Miceli,Earnie Shavers,Yvon Durelle,Tommy Gomez, Rubin Carter, Peter Maher,Tony Sibson,Eugene Hart,David Tua,Cleveland Williams,Curtess Shepard,Sammy Nesmith,Artie Levine,Iron Hague,Joe Choynski, etc would all have been world champions would they not? Power is a significant asset to possess ,but the ability to deliver it through a combination of timing ,speed, inherent ring craft,is just as important because without those skills ,possessing it is like a gun with no trigger .The ability to avoid return fire and withstand it when necessary is yet another quality that is vital to prolonged success. Example. I don't think Lomachenko has concussive power ,but he seems to be doing okay without it ! Seems to me you are arguing against a premise that hasn't been mooted, but its early morning here and maybe I'm not quite awake yet?
