Juan Diaz and Jermain Taylor. When they were hyped, I didn't buy it. Once they started losing (but also showing immense heart in so doing) and having their bandwagons evacuated like they were going over a cliff, I actually gained a lot of respect for both.
Never liked Froch..still don't. I always had hope in Martinez from the first time I seen him fight. I love southpaws with a high work rate.
Its crazy cuz I feel the same way about Taylor. I didn't respect him till the Winky fight. Then I felt so sorry from him after Pavlik put him on his ass.
:nod Looking back now, I'm able to respect his reign despite having shredded it at the time. He just beat the guys put in front of him, and struggled as much as anyone was going to struggle with certain stylistic quandaries.
Good call on Juan Diaz. "This chubby kid has a lot of heart but will never accomplish anything" .........my first impression of Diaz!
Given his somatotype and the fact that he was only ever half committed to his boxing career with his academic pursuits and being cursed with feather fists, what he did manage to accomplish is really quite impressive.
Pacquiao. When he was knocked out by Medgoen in Thailand, I thought I would never see him again. But He moved up the weight, stopping Barrera. Even though Filipino American friend, who watched the fight with me, didn't know who Marco Antonio Barrera is, I could not help explaining what Pacquiao just did was tremendous achievement for Asian boxing. And the rest is history.
Carlos Mouzzza.. aka Golem.. Was reigning and defending WBA champ before he was annihilated by Hatton.
Seriouslu dude had no skill at all. lol. One of the ugliest fighters of all time. Not one punch has thrown correctly.
