Ha ha ha ha ha Nice work if you can get it ! Youre right though about money not being the deciding factor. I grew up pretty ****in broke but I doubt people meeting me would consider me working class ( assuming I've got a suit on and you cant see all my tats )
I am a suit, working the way up the payscale, but consider myself working class, and always will do - being brought up in south Leeds leaves you with little choice, not that I would prefer to be the other way round!
no matter how much money you get , you still associate with your roots and not what money and payscale you are in.
Being middle class, especially in the West, is not just/mainly about money but mainly about values, aspirations and education and social aspirations, I would say. These values, aspirations and life-style are not conducive to little James becoming a boxer. Even Eubank said he'd much rather his kids - who are clearly middle class - went into tennis than boxing, which he considers a poor man's way of fighting for existence. Typical middle class sports: swimming, tennis, cricket, riding and rugby, for those who like a bit of action...not boxing. Working class kids usually go in for football, if they have the choice, and most do. Boxing is for kids like Edison Miranda, Jermain Taylor or Lucian Bute...and we all know their background and story...in one way or another, for kids who feel they need to literally and figuratively fight to survive/stay away from crime and gangs/make their way in the world... ...am I right?:think
Oh yeah , thats not what Im saying though. I grew up in a sh*tehole but I dont need to act like Scott Harrison to stay true. But yeah no-one likes a " bigtime Charlie "
Quite a good generalisation Decebal, but as a working class citizen live in total contrast to your summary. I played both rugby league and union for years, and a bit of cricket, though my current staple is five a side footy! That said, your point is spot on.
No Govan - good point, though I do recognise the difference between a small minded thug or football hooligan and a working class citizen. My post suggested otherwise atsch
This is because your're a Yorkshireman and in this county, rugby, especially league, is as working class as football. But in Scotland and in the South of England, rugby is what kids play at public school... Can you imagine most middle class parents letting their 16 year-olds leave home without having done their A levels and gone to university to go to a football academy and train there full-time? On the other hand, there are quite a few Oxbridge graduates who make a career playing county cricket on under £30k a year...
Strange really - I think we should follow the Aussie example and give the kids a choice as to what sport they played both summer and winter. I am **** at 11 a side footy, and therefore have no interest whatsoever in playing it, and never had - contrast that to rugby (both codes) I was really good at each yet barely had chance to play either. Add in gymnastics, which I am **** at, as opposed to being given additional time on the athletics track or batting in the nets! I understand the whole public school thing, no doubt a schoolmaster would cringe if the 13 a side game was played, or a 11 a side game other than cricket played within its grounds, but feel it is time to move on into the 21st century!
Apparently, at Eton they play both rugby and football, not to mention their own wall version of football... ...democratic or what?
Joe Calzaghe is clearly working class - there's nothing middle class about him, except his money and what it can buy. Eubank, on the other hand, had it much tougher growing up and yet...he is middle class...and not because of his accent or poshness either...even if he loses all his money and ends up in a bedsit, he'd still be middle class.
you can also get chumps who go to uni for four years and end up working security at toys r us for less than minimum wage - now those are the stupid ****ers. no doubt with a refined accent, but no common sense![/quote] I'd imagine 4 years of college and then working @ ToysRUs security is more of an indication of being a sick *******.
I have seen it on TV, 'the wall game' - as it is officially known Has some funny kind of scrummages (known as a 'bully') and is a funny mix of RU & footy, and permits hacking and what is basically rucking from RU I would probably be half decent at that, as a fully paid up member of the 'Neil Back style of play' club, but didn't have the accent and a family to pay £10k a term during my high school years. Shame. Not :rofl
Chris Eubank has already been declared bankrupt I believe, though please correct me if wrong..... Sthomas - you are a cynic! Security at Woolworths or Sainsbury's if you prefer!
