I was just reading about poor old Ricky Hattons troubles and saw that aside from issues with coke and booze he also allegedly got punched out by some body builder dude in a dispute over a fruit machine or something. It got me wondering whether a boxer getting beaten up by an average Joe (no matter how big) is as unusual as it would seem.I don't mean old or infirm ex pugs but relatively young and capable men (like Hatton). I know there are plenty of examples of boxers or ex boxers whipping arse but are there many examples of the opposite scenario. For example Aussie boxer Shannon Taylor who lost a world title shot to Shane Mosley also got into a bar fight with a rugby league player he was drinking with (not an unusual occurance as Taylor is/was a volatile character especially when pissed) and apparently got the stuffing punched out of him by the (admittedly) larger man.Still and all I'd expect a trained fighter to be able to handle most men no matter how big they are. Are there any other examples?
....robert mitchum cold-cocked bernie reynolds in a bar fight...observers said he did it with one punch.
Yeah but it's a clear sign of how far Ricky Hatton has slipped that he's binging and getting beaten up by nobodies. Surely after all the years of training and thousands upon thousands of punches thrown and received that his muscle memory alone would allow him to be able to look after himself no matter how many lines he's done.
Do you know what inhaling seven lines of high quality cocaine does to a person, while you're **** faced drunk none the less? You want to talk about muscle memory, cocaine stimulates your nervous system. It's just a "feeling" of being high, your body operates completely different under the influence of hard drugs.
I know bugger all about drugs. They don't interest me and people who are on them interest me even less. I know first hand how much being alcohol affected can hinder your performance though and I know Ricky loves a drink so it's understandable if he couldn't operate at his maximum level.Cocaine is used so people can keep drinking for even longer I'm led to believe. But nevertheless Ricky was a world class boxer and he did come off second best to a member of the general public. The why's and where fors aren't really relevent as I'm just looking for other examples of where this has happened before.
Yeah exactly. Not to mention being about 60 pounds overweight and being hammered of coke and drink....he's never gonna have much of a chance!
I wasn't looking for excuses for why Ricky got touched up just examples of it happening to other fighters. Matter of fact my sympathies for Hatton are rapidly diminishing. If he's stupid enough to waste his money and brain cells doing drugs and boozing like this then getting beaten up by a nobody over some rubbish argument in a pub then stiff ****. He's only got himself to blame.
I think Fernando Vargas got choked out by some second rate heavyweight mma fighter one time, and hes been in many street fights where he himself will say 'you win some, you lose some' but what one has to realiise is, say well known boxer A is out on the town, getting completely smashed and is drunk as hell, then gets in a fight and gets knocked out by some nobody. You have to take into account how drunk said boxer is.... its not some impressive task to take out ANYBODY when their a certain level of smashed, so i dont put much stock into it to be honest. As for other examples, i heard Shannon Briggs got beat up by some football player.
I think Briggs punched out some football player, breaking his jaw.It wasn't too long ago. Jeff Fenech was rumoured to have pulled a gun on a rugby league player called Peter Tunks after getting the worst of a street fight with him.Fenech claims he punched **** out of him so who knows?
Taking out a man who uses his fists for a living is obviously not easy to do. I can't recall it ever happening to a fighter who wasn't either drunk or getting hit when he wasn't looking. Tony "The Tiger" Lopez talked about being approached at a party once by some guy who thought he was tough. The guy threatened to hit him and Tony just eyeballed him and said casually "Go ahead. You'll miss. I guarantee you'll miss. Then I'm gonna hit you. One shot. That's all I'll need." That pretty much sums it up for me. BTW, the guy let it go. Lucky for him!
I havnt heard that one if its recent, but im fairly sure that Briggs was also beat up by a football player, i want to say a college one at that, after briggs beat up one of his football friends. I dont think this is recent though.
Its pretty easy for anyone to get taken out when your drunk/high or sucker punched. I wouldnt read much into it. 1 heart warming story was an 80yo pensioner using his boxing skills to knock out 2 attempted muggers
