This is really messed up. Right now, the mayor of Los Angeles is saying that he may ban sporting events until 2021, but if the situation continues to worsen, I think we could be looking at 2022. If this is the case, how many active boxers could we lose due to inactivity? Do you think boxers can maintain their weight and form for 2 years? Everyone will be facing ring rust. Will guys be hungrier? Or will the loss of motivation be so bad that they leave the sport?
also canelo, craword, spence, porter, thurman, pacquaio, fury, wilder, lomachenko, etc would be in there early to mid 30's when the come back. this corona virus has really pissed me off, and somebody must pay!
one way or another there'll IMO be fights long, long before 2022. it's been discussed before of course top level boxing would be relatively easy to do behind closed doors because PPV is viable and you'd only really need a ref, two fighters, + a handful of staff per team. even training can be done with a relatively small entourage including sparring partners - it's not like a football club, with a huge squad of players including reserve/youth teams etc and where the crowd play such a big part. grass roots is the real problem.
The United States will reopen for business before 2021 whether it is encouraged or not. The president already convened a panel of major sports promoters and said as much. This is an election year. The economy has direct implications on how an incumbent will perform. The UFC already has a plan in place for a show next month. Bob Arum just gave details on how he plans to move forward to resume fights in the near future. Boxers aren't baseball players. Some fighters only fight once a year anyway. Some blow up between camps already. I doubt this will have effects as severe as some say.
I favor an optimistic frame of mind. Let's hope a period of uncertainty lights a fire under the asses of some of the 'we have all the time in the world so let's be content with waiting 3 years between serious tests' goof-offs in this sport.
