I beleive that boxers from the past could hang with more modern guys but I know that most people think that boxing has evolved and guys from the 20s like Walker, Tunney Loughran, Sharkey, Gibbons etc. would be easily knocked out by more modern fighters like Jones or Hopkins or Martinez etc. I was discussing that with a guy who beleives newer is better and he says the "hands by the waist, stilted movement one punch type" fighters from this era would be destroyed by these newer guys. Anyway he asked me to show him a film where you can see proper combinations in a fight film from this era and I really want to show him a great film, you can see it clearly and there is no doubt left that these guys were not just one punch type fighters. Dnt get me wrong, I've shown some good films, pretty much every one Ive seen shows this but he is looking for a really great one which leaves no doubt in his mind of some elite fighters throwing combos and really looking as good as "a modern fighter", not leaving any disappointment. Since there are some, who are better and have more experience of fight films, any suggestions which film should be shown to him?
bman, There is ONE film showing the fantastic combinations that would convince your friend that nothing truly has changed, but the quality and availability of scarce films of the "oldtimers ". It as I have posted before, a fight where Tommy Gibbons ,flattens Jack Bloomfield of England ,with as pretty a combination as you can see. I saw it on Youtube 1 year ago,but it is no longer shown. Try to get this fight,1923-4. Your friend will be CONVINCED. Someone has it....
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=303474 here from just last week, old PROPER film footage - these guys are great, and they done it damn near every week. film technology is what improved and handling of it, NOT the fighters!!! show your friend this.
