Ages of ring top ten p4p rated boxers 2014:

    1. 37
    2. 30
    3. 38
    4. 35
    5. 30
    6. 40
    7. 39
    8. 33
    9. 23
    10. 36
    Average age: 34.1

Ages of ring top ten p4p rated boxers 1989: (when they first started p4p ratings)

    1. 23
    2. 27
    3. 25
    4. 26
    5. 30
    6. 23
    7. 31
    8. 32
    9. 25
    10. 30
    Average age: 27.2

Are improvements in medical technology/less frequent fighting/other factors allowing boxers to extend their primes and peak at later ages?

This oldening is evidenced in other sports as well. In tennis it's documented that the average age of top 100 ranked players has increased quite a lot over the last 2 decades.

Young fighters take the long path to titles and great opportunity, much more so than in the past.

Of course it has a lot to do with people aging slower nowadays.
Less fights, less wars, easier opponents, better food and of course hard work/medication.

Ali looked 50 at 38 and 'fought' like he was too after all those wars, close fights and countless rematches.

I'd like to see Hopkins ranked at #9, then average age would be almost 37:yep

    Modern science.
Nobody in the Top-15 is clean. And not only in boxing.

PEDs have been around since the 70s.

    Its more than that.

Yes I think this sort of thing is happening across the board. People in general are living longer and are retaining a better standard of health and quality of life into their older years and we see that reflected in our sportsmen and women.

Its partly the careers. Guys dont fight 150 fights anymore. Big fighters fight 2, maybe 3 times a year.
Medical science has come a long way, if you have a brain injury etc it gets detected early and you're not allowed fight.

Knowledge about training and nutrition is far ahead of what it used to be.

    Its a combination of things.

It's about lifestyle and dedication in my view. Guys that do dope, eat like pigs between bouts and drink do not have careers much beyond 30.

Better nutrition, less fights and overall increase in knowledge of the sport.

less and less slugfest IMO, people will now happily box to victory instead of going all out, of course we still have a few other those but more often than not its a safety first option

Boxers are getting older because the young are getting weaker and skills are becoming rarer.

It has a lot to do with the fact that young fighters get severely over hyped nowadays. They get over hyped, then when an experienced veteran gets their hands on him, he usually fails and fails miserably docking any chance of getting on the p4p list...

Guys like Bradley and Ward who earned their way to the top of the list are few and far between, and their boring styles have a lot to do with it. Let them get a few exciting KO's and they wind up getting launched onto a pedastal they don't belong at... Then we have to watch guys like Maidana kill all their momentum (Broner) and knock them off the p4p list...

And occasionally you get guys like Floyd, Pac, Hopkins, and Wlad who are just that good... And most great amateurs nowadays turn pro later...

People are too impatient... When boxing gets a star like Floyd/Pac/DLH we immediately want them replaced and pick their replacements willy-nilly without actually seeing what they have to offer.

And what we end up with are boxing's biggest up and coming stars are far from the best prospects/contenders/young champions we have available. They only get there by being false replicas of established stars...
