There's a decrease in fundamental skills and boxing "know-how". Some of it has to do with the older boxers being dedicated, talented, and possibly more knowledges in nutrition/science, but the overall talent pool is shallow.

Fighters like Hopkins, Mayweather, Marquez. Just take a look at their skills, their technical knowledge. Placement of their feet, knowing the angles, judging the distance, knowing how to fight at different ranges. Particularly Hopkins. Look at the MUCH younger guys he is beating. Pascal, Pavlik, Cloud, Shumenov, etc...He has so much more ring intelligence and knows how to do the subtle things.

Of course some of it has do with B-Hop being a genetic freak and super disciplined, but it also an unfortunate reflection of the sport.

I often read these articles on this site because they describe things that go on in the ring that often go unnoticed. I mean, when you watch a fight, how much are you really focusing on a guy's footwork? It's noticable when it's terrible and clumsy, but mostly you just are focusing the punches that are flying. At least that's what I do.

Interesting observation. I guess many factors account for that. Interesting to see if it is like that in other sports.

Yes, boxers as with anyone else get older. Next year all of them will be even older.

Great post and very insightful of the real reason behind the decline of era's.
It's not just boxing, but in many other areas of sports and entertainment.

Superfights nowadays are rare and when we do have them for the most part are mismatches. (Canelo-Mayweather) Superfights 20 years ago became classics. We do have classics today, but not from superfights, unless you consider the Marquez-Pacquiao saga as superfights. The 4th one could/should be labeled as such.
