Just reading about Leonard saying Hagler had heavy hands that felt like cement and it reminded me of reading about Barry McGuigan who had, apparently, really brawny hands. It was Hugh MeIlvanney and he said that people underestimate the importance of a fighter's hands.

History's biggest hitters all seemed to have huge hands - Liston, Foreman, Lewis, Shavers, Dempsey. And otherwise strong fighters like Ali and LaMotte only had relatively small hands and comparatively average power. I imagined what it would have been like to be hit by someone with Hearns' snap and Hagler's hard hands and it doesn't bear thinking about.

So what do people think about the importance of the make up of the hand? Not in terms of it not breaking under the impact of a punch but rather what it adds to a punch's effect assuming technique is okay.

Didn't Jack Dempsey have 11 1/4 inch fists? That's fairly small. Think Ali had 12 1/2 inch fists actually. Liston's were 15 inches apparently...

A friend of mine that I also sparred with had very heavy hands. I mean when I shook his hands they were actually heavy!
And yes he did hit very hard.
Another friend of mine older brother was a pro LHW who also sparred with the likes of Saad and Braxton and my pal with the heavy hands dropped him in a heated spar. So yes I believe heavy hands transfers to power punching.

I think it's a really helpful boost, like other attributes that lend to punching power, but it's secondary to the shoulder snap.

    Found some fist sizes:
    Sonny Liston: 15 inches.
    Primo Carnera: 14 3/4 inches.
    Frank Bruno: 14 inches.
    Bonecrusher Smith: 13 3/4 inches.
    Riddick Bowe: 13 1/2 inches.
    Mike Tyson: 13 inches.
    Wladimir Klitschko: 13 inches.
    Joe Frazier: 13 inches.
    Evander Holyfield: 12 1/2 inches.
    Muhammad Ali: 12 1/2 inches.
    Lennox Lewis: 12 inches.
    Earnie Shavers: 12 inches.
    Joe Louis: 11 3/4 inches.
    Rocky Marciano: 11 1/2 inches.
    Jack Dempsey: 11 1/4 inches.
    Vitali Klitschko: 11 inches.

Not sure how accurate some of these are but there doesn't appear to be much correlation between punching power and fist size.

Tells me if you can punch, you can punch, regardless of hand size. With wraps on and 10oz gloves I don't think an inch here and there matters. Shavers is below average and hes the hardest puncher there, or meant to be !

Rahman has huge hands, made lennox lewis hands look like baby hands according to emanuel steward.

Vitali has small hands, adamek has huge hands for a guy his size.

Tua has small hands for his thick built.

Mike tyson has big hands, and i think frazier had bigger hands than foreman and ali

Some of those measurements have surprised me. Vitali s been a few inches smaller than marciano s!. And frazier s bigger than Lewis.! U expect guys like lennox and vit to have absolutely giant mitts and a guy like rock to have little kiddy s lol. Interesting facts.

Nicolay Valuea, the biggest heavyweight title holder of them all had unbelievably small hands for someone his height and weight. I mean, they were massive compared to an average person but looking at him they looked so small in proportion to the rest of him. Could be why he was never a big puncher and never seem to be able to punch his own weight. Just as well, I suppose for the other heavyweights around that he fought.

Yeah it's funny that. Vitali's are tiny lol, especially for his size. Lennox's aren't that big either.

I think there should be a hand measurement size contest with all the surviving heavy weight champ s. And donald trump can do the measurements, cos he s got big hand s...!
