Foreman was said to have extremely heavy hands and you really felt the impact whether it was a jab or even a glancing shot. Tyson on the other hand, was said by several opponents to be surprisingly not to be as hard a hitter as they thought pre fight but it was the sheer speed of the punches along with the power that really surprised them and caused the main damage.
Big strong hands definitely help only if the power is there to begin with.....Liston had the power and then big heavy hands to go along with it as did Dempsey who had very strong hands that were heavy...the bone structure helps if you have the inborn punch like shavers
That's interesting I have little hands ,[ I'm a small guy or was], my partner has just measured my fist at 12 inches ,the same as Shavers!... http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail...as-the-tv-marathon-to-end-picture-id517758526 http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/photos/jack-dempsey?excludenudity=true&family=editorial&mediatype=photography&page=9&phrase=jack dempsey&sort=mostpopular#license http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/photos...&phrase=jack dempsey&sort=mostpopular#license
Hagler has massive fists, they even look bigger than the HW fighters he has pictures with. Ray Leonard had small bones but that didn't affect his power, for someone who weighs around 110kg I've got tiny hands but I still hit hard. One thing that is a certainty though small hands are easily broken, bigger is definitely better in that department IMO.
12 inches isn't small I don't think. If you were Shavers size then I would imagine it to be about average for that size.
Was just going to post something regarding this and saw your comments. So wondered how you go on if your a big puncher with small hands. Would it affect your punching power? Would you hold back on hitting with full force because of the fear of breaking bones?
I know first hand that it has an effect, after shattering my hands in a fight I was cautious hitting them with full force. Also both of my tendons are fcuked in my pinkies so now my little fingers resemble fish hooks. They will never straighten and will undoubtedly cause me trouble when I get older. I caused these injuries in street fights and tbh my hands are holding up so far after starting back training for a few weeks.
I think it's more just a reflection of the fact that bigger/taller people tend to have bigger hands on average. I don't think having a hand that is an inch or two bigger than another guy's hand, in and of itself, contributes much of a difference in punching power....just my opinion though.
I think it has more to do with bone density... Bigger surface doesn't necessary mean stronger and harder
I saw a picture lewis vs vitali press or weigh in, both with closed fists and lewis fist is bigger obvious Also Shavers on pics looks like he has mitts I think both of them have bigger fists than 12 inches
