I don't want to hear anymore dumb fans who claim "Boxing has progressed since (fill in the blank)." They see a bunch of guys nowadays taking steroids and assume the fighters are better nowadays. Or even better, they see a record get broken in the 100 M dash and then conclude that Mayweather can beat Sugar Ray Robison Fighters today just aren't as skilled as they used to be. You don't see people with as good of defense and head movement. Even pressure fighters of old would move their damn head to get close. Chavez Sr. had very good defense. The art of feinting seems to be dead also. Watch Leonard/Duran and when they were fighting out range, it was two guys having a hard time hitting eachother and feinting to create openings. Everytime I watch the fight, I get blown away by the skill that is displayed offensively and defensively. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZnsDfrnZjY&feature=relmfu[/ame] I'll bring up another fight. The Body Snatcher vs Curry. Can anybody tell me the last fight that took place that had this amount of skill between two fighters? Both guys threw combinations, both feinted, both could fight up close and at range. Both moved their heads, used their feet and parried. Both them tried to establish their jabs and counter. What the hell happened to boxing? :? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUMyC3mTNBY[/ame]
There were more pure boxers maybe then, yet people when they see that today"boring".. Some fans call Floyd boring,or Juan/Pac III fight, or Cotto in the Marg II fight "running"
The sensational fighters 2000-2012 are just as sensational IMO (Roy Jones, Lennox Lewis, Wlad, Pacquiao, Mayweather) but yeah, there's considerably less depth and that has consequences. Some of it is natural. Fighters fight less and spar less. Fighters can't invest three or four rounds in a feint when they only have 12 rounds to win a fight and it's harder to commit to a 9 round aggressive fight plan when you train for 12. **** like that.
Excellent thread. Very few fighters today would be great in those eras. I expect Ward-Dawson to showcase a very high skill level of boxing. One of the man reasons why I'm looking forward to the fight. Two prime quality operators going at it. So rare in today's game.
Floyd Jr is more skilled than Duran or Leonard. Can't say he is a better fighter though, but skill wise yes.
Following on from McGrain, I think the cream of the crop over the last 15 years or so has been fantastic, they'd be stars in any era. The standard of contender has dropped dramatically in my eyes. Amatuer Boxing is getting a re-form and it's needed. You'll see amatuer stars produced who are better suited to the pro ranks. Hopefully they give body punching the respect it deserves from the rule book. Also, ALOT of tricks have been forgotten, or have died out. Guys like Kevin Rooney, Teddy Atlas, Emmanual Steward (Who has been running trainer clinics to his credit) need to start either training coaches, or writing down their secrets, because it's not fair that so many great techniques and tactical powers die with them, Mike Tyson too.
Floyd Jr knows how to sell his fights and manages his career really carefully. If Leonard and Duran would have managed their careers the same as Floyd, they would have retired undefeated. I'm not trying to hate on Floyd, I just want to speak the truth here. Floyd's name is held at a higher standard because of that. Just my opinion. *Lets not make this another Floyd Mayweather thread.
I tell you though, circa 2007, 2008, there would have been modernists all over this thread like a rash going mental and going crazy and screaming and posting videos of Harry Greb sparring. I kind of miss them.
:good:good:good Totally agree & not just because i'am a mean gobbed miserable old git but because the evidence is on filmyep One of the reason's the skill level has dissapated is down to the fact we manafacture TV champions, there's no more contenders, every **** has a wallmart belt these days. You don't have to fight your way to the top anymore & learn along the way with the odd close points defeat & come back with flaws ironed out. Yer just got too be a Victor Ortiz clone for ethnic marketing, stroke Ricky Hatton (WBU World Champion) for Brit consumption, promotor with all the connections & monopoly of TV dates, media savvy yes sir no sir, i'am just a humble man sir who wants world peace & an end to child prostitution & wife battery & have a 20 & 0 record of KOing cans & you get to be a multi ****ing millionaire the easy way when comparisoned to those of the recent past who had to fight for their dinner on a regular basis. No need to learn the finer arts of the trade to maintain yer momentum in yer drive too the top when you can employ all the above in todays mass media marketing HBO controlled society or something similar & reap the Mega rewards if yer get me wayward drift:yep
