Just curious to see what boxers have reached crossover fame in their country which may not transcend internationally.

Australia: Danny Green and Anthony Mundine are very well known, and will receive mainstream attention for their fights in the regular media - They routinely get coverage for things outside of boxing.

Even though Vic Darchinyan and Michael Katsidis are the better boxers, they barely raise any interest outside of boxing news outlets. I would say Katsidis did receive a bit of indirect exposure as his brother sadly died recently (he was a famous jockey set to race in Australia's biggest horse race today)

I'd say more Australian's have heard of Kostya Tsyzu and Jeff Fenech, but they never reached any mainstream popularity. Fenech did receive massive popularity for his fights, but nothing major outside of the ring.

Well I remember he achieved a lot of attention here when he beat the shot Mike Tyson, as well as his brave attempt at a Klitschko brother. Non-boxing fans who I've spoken to, know who Danny Williams is.

I think it's amazing nobody mentioned Hatton for the UK? Was the cocaine bust big news? It made the world news here on news.com.au and I was pretty surprised with that.

But saying that, alot of the english people* I know barely know who Hatton is?

*I should point out they have most have lived in Australia for more than 5 years

But internationally those 3 are pretty big names, hence the reason I didn't include them. I thought this thread was asking which cross-over star from your country, is/was not well known internationally.

Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe would be perhaps the biggest and most recent. Khan and Haye are definite mentions.

Scott Harrison still gets a bit of attention in Scotland, though sadly more for accounts of what he's done outside the ring!

Actually, Ricky hatton is Britains most popular boxer ever.

Frank Bruno is also very well known.
